Default Bad harmonic balancer

Helllo,

After getting tired of my dealer not being able to track the cause of my spontanious Active handling messages I took my car to another mechanic.

They noticed a vibration coming from my harmonic balancer(It was). They are offering to change it for me and add an underdrive pulley at no cost for giving them the gig.

I've heard good and bad things about that mod. Being that my car has 29k miles on it and the oem has already gone bad, should I go with the OEM one??

ASP or ASW one of those brands. No cost due to warranty. if I wanted to go with say an ATI unit I would have to pay the 400+ dollars.

I kinda dont want to dish out the money for an ATI if OEM will be free.

What do you pros think. (Money is always an issue to most, of course)

I dont have heads or a cam at this time.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Rod

There is nothing wrong with the OEM piece, an ATI or a Power Bond unit is better. But I am wondering how your mechanic came to the conclusion that the OE unit is bad.

Me too since there is no out of tolerance specification for pulley wobble which is what I suspect you are seeing. Only if the wobble is severe enough to make the belt start chirping at idle will GM replace it.

I can see a deffinite wobble in the pulley. Not chirping though.

I have heard of some of those brands(powerbond and swp) causing timming chain problems in some motors. Should I go with an underdrive pulley at all(for the gain since im at it) or stick to stock?

Im gonna get a second opinion from another dealer on the wobble problem.

Even though GM will wait for it to fly off befor fixing it, if the wobble is even a sign that it is about to go bad then I might as well do it before warranty goes bye bye

Is that wobble a sign of it going bad in the near future?
Stock or aftermarket brand?(ati not an option due to $)
underdrive or stock size?
Down sides?

Thanks for taking the time to reply

I don't think so. Apparently a lot of people are running with pulleys that wobble to some degree. And is doesn't mean that it's going to fly off as long as you are not in the first 11039 cars in 05.

Sorry but that's wrong. It was a "Technical Service Bulletin" (TSB) not a recall.

Timing chain problems? No, that's ludicrous. All the UD pulley does is reduce the rotational velocity of a few of your accessories thereby increasing the mechanical advantage of your engine (by 10HP); the alternator is the important one where you'll have to reprogram your computer to make your engine idle a little higher (to 700RPM), that's it! I have the PowerBond by the way and I love it, no problems.

Just make sure if you decide to go with an UD pulley, also install the crankshaft pins, you'll be happy you did!

Do you happen to know the part number of the drive belt was you needed to go along with the UD pulley?

I really don't know what you are talking about because the problem was related to first 11039 cars built in 05. Not any beyond that.

And if it were a recall, you would have been notified directly by GM, not by a dealer. You would chose the dealer you want to go to for the repair. Sounds to me like the dealer was trying to drum up some service business.

A powerbond or ATI pulley is 100% better than a stocker.Should not affect the warrenty at all.

Is that a 25% UD??
I have a 10% PB UD and it works fine, The Powerbond is far better than stock and it is a Harmonic Balancer.

The engine felt quicker to respond. As for the warranty I am not sure. Also it is a good idea to have an extra belt in the car just in case yours wears out while you are on a road trip.
