Default Quaife Upgrade

Aloha again fellas!

I am making arrangements to buy a new diff, and as always am dragging my feet, trying to make sure that I get it right the first time and have no regrets.

I've narrowed my search down to RPM as my supplier, but want to make certain that I am buying the "best" diff for my needs. I'm looking at their Stage 3 differential with the quaife upgrade (thanks Ed) & 3:90 gears. Is this a solid way to go? Another member and I were talking about their Stage 5 diff, but the specifications are not listed on the site, so it's difficult for me to compare. Anyone know the differences/benefits?

While I'm at it, is it worth it to put the quaife upgrade in it as well?

Again, I know I ask a lot of questions, but I just need to be sure that I'm doing this right as it's not poket change that we're talking about...

Thanks again fellas!

Keith

I am a huge fan of Torsen diffs . . . no clutch packs wearing out, no intermittent grabbing on short radius turns, proactive torque biasing.

The only downside is that it isn't free . . .

What do you plan to do with the car that would necessitate the upgrade?

I drag race the factory diffs for years and don't have posi problems so long as I use the factory spec diff fluid. Royal purple was too slick and I was having problems with peg leg burnouts until I switched back to factory fill. I also road course (not as much anymore) with no problems....but the temps scared me.

I have a diff temp gauge....if I were to recommend anything, it would be a diff cooler. The diff gets up to nearly 300 on spirited highway runs and will go higher on road course (it was the limiting factor in my car and caused me to stop after 20 minutes or so). I've got a trans cooler - without that the trans got hot too and I had two buddies ruin transmissions by over heating them. The factory put a diff cooler on the z06 for a reason. I'd spend my money on that before I bought a different posi unit.

Just my 2c fwiw. You'll Love the 3.90's.

I don't plan on doing anything out of the ordinary.... I was under the impression that traction would be greatly improved with the upgrade, is that not the case?

Another thing that I'm curious about is the number of Forum Members that have said that their gears crapped out at 500 or so miles.... Reliability is a major concern for me, as I can't stand to have my car away from my garage, and out of my site.... Was the installer to blame for the high number of failed gear installs? Will I have less problems if my diff is built by RPM because that's what they do? My concern is that I'm thousands of miles away from them, and do not want to ship it back & forth for warranty issues....

Thanks for the replies guys, your opinions are greatly appreciated!

I know it may not be the case, but I would think there would be one shop in Honolulu(Oahu) that could build you an upgraded rear end so if something happened then you are just a few minutes away.

I had 4.10 with cam only and knew I couldnt shift fast enough so went back to stock 3.42 with SC .

You'll break traction a lot easier with the upgrade... The diff itself will not make a difference since the factory Posi already locks the wheels together and allows you to put down as much power as your tires can handle...
