what parts are different between the z51 and stock suspension? Springs, shocks, sway bars, control arms, rotors, calipers? i'm looking at a non z51 car and wondering whats involved to convert.
To my knowledge, shocks, springs, brake rotors and caliper brackets (for mildly larger brakes), sway bars, and I believe I heard that the Z-51 equipped cars have slightly tighter transmission ratios.

The brake rotors are larger, the calipers are the same size, except for the rear piston size. You forgot the oil and transmission coolers for mZ6 equipped cars.
I would invest in aftermarket shocks as the stock GM shocks are about all equally poor. I also would pass on the brakes as they offer only bling and no performance advantage. The springs are fairly close, with the base rear springs actually being stiffer. It isn't worth it to swap the transmission either. You can swap the sways but again I'd go aftermarket. The tires on the Z51 are the supercars, but runflats are all crap so again I'd go with something aftermarket.
All can be accomplished very easily except for those trans gears -- which make the z51 stand out performance wise compared to the stock coupes.
The base transmission is the same as the Z06. If you plan on stock horsepower levels the Z51 gears might be advantageous. If you plan on adding substantial power, I would stick with the base transmission. I'm always seeing posts about someone complaining they can't get traction in the first three gears. Guess which transmission they have?
