Default Tech 2 CANdi

If I were to buy a tech 2 for my personal use, the best price I've seen is about $4000 with CANdi module. It appears to be a "vetronix". Does anyone know if this is a good brand ? Then when looking it over there is about a $2400 "GM MDI Bundle with tis subscription". I had read that someone bought a tech 2 from ebay and used it once and then it locked up. Does anyone know if the $2400 dollar bundle is necissary to keep the $4000 tech 2 operational.
staying with the 2006 I already got eliminates need to upgrade for newer model cars.
I am very disappointed in the car as to the fact that almost all repairs require tech2 , but if I did pay this $4000 could I repair the car now and then put the tech 2 in a drawer and use it whenever I get a problem in the future?
Got 2 more questions:
If I were to replace my body control module I would have to setup the BCM, and calibrate the brake pedal position sensor, and program in the vin #. Is this vetronix tech 2 capable of this?
And my last question: what would be wrong with buying a used one off ebay for about $2000?

WHAT? You can pull the whole drivetrain (motor, transmission, differential, hubs, driveshafts), the shock, all the accessories, etc right out of the car and swap everything out and never need a Tech2.
Almost NO repairs require a Tech2. The only times I can think of that you'd need one is if you are reprogramming the BCM or cycling the ABS, and for that you can go to the dealer for a lot less than 4 grand...

I had purchased a Tech2 and used it for about 3 months. I had problems with it and eventually sent it back for a refund.

I loved it. Anything I wanted to work on I could. It IS the same tool that the dealer uses and Vetronix is the ONLY brand. The rest of them are overseas knockoffs. You get what you buy.

The Tech2 when used with GM's Tis 2 web (you'll need this to program BCM and ECM and a few other things but most of the stuff is stand alone and not necessary) and A/C Delco eSi service manuals online or in print you can check every aspect of your car. You will no longer be a parts changer. The Tech2 will give you the necessary information to dianose the car and fix it along with making all the necessary adjustments.

Now with that said. During the time It took to refund my purchase and I was looking for a replacement I got to know my local GM Vette mechanic. He has treated me very well and reasonable. I have since found this to nbe much more valuable and reasonable than having having so much money tied up in a tool. It will take a long time to really ever feel like you can recoup the cost of the tool but their is a lot of satisfaction in knowing you fixed it right the first time without much to any guessing.

BTW I feel this way and I wouk on and rebuild several Vettes per year.

I own two TECH2, one is a hot back up. I use mine nearly every day for me its an invaluable tool. However for the home wrench its a very expensive tool that you may or may not use in your tool box. You should get to know your dealer well, and take them a beer or two you will find that usually one of their guys will more than likely just scan your car for free. I do that a lot for my customers, and don't charge a dime for it. Don't bother with the MDI, you need dealer specific software to use if effectively, and that is something they don't give away, it is quite expensive. It is available from Vetronix but as I mentioend its very expensive.

Hi Steven,

As a weekend warrior I purchased the Tech 2 because I have not been able to find a mechanic that I trust my car with.

As a result I have become the primary mechanic for my car.

That being said, without the TIS subscription and software on your computer usage of the Tech II is extremely limited. See the Tech 2 as an modem between the car and the computer any serious change requires an internet connection and active login to GM support to retrieve the configuration of your vehicle.

Unless someone can correct me, there is no way to have the Tech 2 programmed to contain the specific configuration of your vehicle.

In essence it is an expensive purchase and use is limited without the software.
