Default Lifetime Oil Filter ???

Does anyone use a lifetime oil filter? There is a company called "Pure Power" (and there may be others) that makes a lifetime oil filter. The filter has a screen filter inside it instead of a paper filter, and supposedly allows more oil to flow through the filter causing less wear on the engine. The filter can be taken apart, cleaned with soapy water, put back together and re-installed on the car. I believe the price of the filter is approximately $200. Any thoughts???

stick with the throw away filters. i could buy almost 30 filters for 200 dollars, and that would equal almost 15 years (2 a year @ 6k miles) or 7.5 years (4 a year @ 3k miles).

Hi Carl,

Thanks for the input. I considered the price and agree with you that I would be looking at 30 or so oil changes to break even on the price. But, what really peaked my curiosity was the performance this filter has to offer such as more oil flow, reduced wear on engine, better filtration, etc.... Maybe it is clever advertising, but it does make me think...

Stick to a good filter like the AC Delco UPF48R as used in the ZO6 and ZR1. I buy them six at a time and the cost, with S&H, is about $8.00 each. Life time oil filter = snake oil.

I wouldn't call it clever, I call it what it is, a fraud.

I wouldn't even remotely consider a "lifetime" oil filter. Use a quality, conventional oil filter and replace the old filter at every oil change.

This is the only "lifetime" oil filter I would use. You replace the filter elements, not the canister itself.

Does this filter fit all C6 including the base models? Also where are you getting them? Thanks.

From what I've read, yes.

GM Part Number 12626224 – UPF48R Ultra Guard Oil Filter - Currently used on the 2009 Z06 and ZR1 engines. Can be used in place of the PF48.

Words from ACDelco:
Rely on Duraguard Oil Filters to: Trap particles as small as 25 microns, insuring a clean supply of lubricating oil flow into the moving parts of your engine. Provide a leak-proof connection with the double lock seal at the base of the filter shell and gasket retainer plate, so dirty oil stays away from your engine. Thermosetting adhesive seals hold the paper media in place for consistent, dependable oil filtration throughout the filter. UltraGuard is worth its weight in gold for your engine – ACDelco Ultraguard Gold Oil Filters. Protecting engines better than any other oil filter on the market, ACDelco Ultraguard Gold Oil Filters are built using state-of-the-art filter technology that helps them reduce engine wear by 74%. In addition, ACDelco Ultraguard Gold Oil Filters remove contaminants before they enter the engine with the highest efficiency rating on the market at 98%, trapping particles as small as 8-10 microns. Ensure a fresh supply of oil to the bearings, rings and other moving parts. Have a Teflon-coated gasket that protects against leakage and makes them easier to install and remove.

More Info:
GM Powertrain has released a new oil filter for the 2009 Corvette. The new design UltraguardTM Gold UPF48R oil filter will be used on the following OEM applications:
Z06 - LS7 7.0L and ZR1 - LS9 6.2L

According to GM, this filter was designed with the following in mind: “With the addition of piston oil cooling nozzles and other unique lubrication system requirements, a new design dual-rotor oil pump is required for the LS9 application. The new design oil pump produces greater volume and higher system oil pressure. To meet those requirements, a new oil filter with higher BURST strength is required.

The UltraguardTM Gold UPF48R filter (U is for Ultra and R is for Racing) is black in color, has a thicker exterior shell and can be identified as GM part number 12626224. The internal components are the same in both the UPF48R and the PF48 oil filters. The UPF48R can be used in applications where the PF48 is specified.”

GM requires the UPF48R for the LS9 application and is also used for the LS7 application as both engines are built at GM’s Wixom Engine Performance Build Center.

You can use this new UltraguardTM Gold UPF48R filter (part number 12626224) with all 2007, 2008 and 2009 C6 Corvettes that stipulate the use of GM’s PF48 oil filter, if you desire this new higher burst strength racing design.

Other than that the only non 'cartridge type' oil filter I would trust for any extended period of time/miles is the Amsoil oil filter:

Go with either a Mobil1 M1-113 or a K&N HP-1017. They are premium oil filters and can be purchased locally at most auto parts houses. If if look around you can usually find oil/oil filter deals. Currently AutoZone has 5+ qt jug of Mobil1 oil and a Mobil1 oil filter for $29.99. I believe that O'Rielly's has a simular deal going on currently.

Over 25,000 applications for foreign, domestic, gasoline, diesel, bio-diesel, autos, trucks, motorcycles, marine, off-road, racing, govenment fleets, military equipment, etc. Multiple U.S. Patents."

Aside from the misspelling in the above description on their website, where in the underlined portion does it say how WELL it filters? To flow 100%, I'd hope that most clean filters do, and this one does have a bypass valve. So, there must be a time when the oil bypasses that "filter media" whatever it may be. And it seems to be shredded strands of T304 stainless steel which isn't the type of filtering material I'd think was considered the best for engine life.

In the seventies the toilet paper lifetime filter was the hot ticket. You put a new roll of toilet paper in once and awhile and that was it. If I remember right they even said you never had to change the oil. It didn't last long.

I guess they are still around.

they can advertise that and it would be right to do so. Similiar to rapidrife plugs advertising, the ysay "Gain 10 HP guaranteed" Of course anyone can advertise that,,,,,,replace old worn plugs and gain that. Replace any filter and gai nbetter flow, filtration etc...

I use the Pure Power oil filter and I'm very happy with it. I spoke with the designer at the SEMA Show about their filter vs standard filters as well as a long discussion about oil. He explained that with regular filters, the oil just flows down along the pleated paper folds inside the filter housing. That is how standard oil filters work. With the Pure Power, the oil actually flows through the fine metal screens to filter and trap any debri that might be there. It is easy to service and I've had no problems with it.

Someone asked about where I buy the AC Delco UPF48R oil filters. My last order was with Forum vendor Fichtner Chevrolet. This filter will fit the LS3 engine as well as the ZO6 and the ZR1. It may fit other GM engines as well.

Filtering efficiency numbers for conventional paper element oil filters are about 40% at 10 microns, 60% at 20 microns, 93% at 30 microns, and 97% at 40 microns.

Premium conventional oil filters like Mobil 1 and ACDelco Ultraguard have a 98% single-pass particle filtration at 10 to 20 microns under S.A.E. certified testing.

Stainless mesh lifetime oil filters usually test about 90% at 30 microns (pretty much sucks when compared to the best throw away filters). Pure Power only claims (now): "filtering efficiency over 90% more efficient in removing debris 30 micros and smaller than conventional RACING oil filters". Your guess is as good as mine what that means.
