So I just bought an 08 F55 coupe automatic, and I keep seeing the automatic 0-60 in all these magazines and online as 4.3 sec. What I dont understand is how they get these times. Now, I havent been goin out and trying to actually time it, but when i punch it from a dead stop it spins like crazy. Are these times mathmatically calculated? or are they actual? Cause if they're real times with stock tires that would mean the car is a good bit faster than that.
Magazine tests are 4.1 to 4.3, usually with a Z51 and always with traction (new tires, warm pavement). REAL daily driving in cool air on cool pavement is traction limited. Sometimes leaving the Traction Control ON helps acceleration!
The throttle is not an on-off switch...you can't just "punch it" from a dead stop or it WILL spin like crazy. It actually takes a liitle skill and some practice to get the best acceleration from a dead stop.
Do you not think a faster car will also "spin like crazy when you punch it"? It requires skill and comes down to the driver. 4.1 - 4.3 is what the car is capable of when driven correctly. Punching it from a dead stop is not the fastest way to 60.
You have to ease down on the throttle and control the wheelspin with your foot. 60 mph times are capable of under 4 seconds in these new ls3's with the right size tire and the right driver. The only time you need to "floor" it from a dead stop is when your looking to have some fun, not when your wanting the fastest time. Go and out and experiment, it all just takes time.
when my car finished 900 KM, i tried it fro a dig and what i got (0-100 km in 4.1 exactly) as most of the magazines said i was surprized with the time i got but at the same time happy , u will get it don't worry
I have a G-tech and have recorded a bunch of 4.00 to 4.10 0-60's in my 08 A6. Even got a few under 4.0 the best being a 3.91. The car acts quite a bit differently on different surfaces and at different ambient and engine temps. Sometimes it just hooks, bogs a bit and then rips, other times it spins and needs a bit of modulation. I have not gotten the hang of it yet and have not been to the track to see how it behaves on a decent surface. The cool weather is starting here so I hope to do that soon.
The magazines use a gps device with a programmed rollout of 3mph. I don't know how accurate these things are, but I'll bet it's less accurate than the maker claims. They also have new tires, and a test site where they can experiment to find good traction.
I have a G-tech too, and it's very inaccurate. It uses a 12 inch rollout, and it's measuring the G's, (with some error), then integrating that curve to get speed, and integrating the speed to get distance. The G graph is a noisy mess, so the speed and distance can be off by alot.
Are these times mathmatically calculated? or are they actual?
They do temp corret, and they don't report the raw times. If you google "how does car and driver test cars" or "how does edmunds test cars" you will get a couple interesting explanations.
