Hello guys.
I am from the C4 forum normaly but have a question about my friend Z06 2008.
He broke his engine and do not know if this is a common thing or how this happened.
Engine has 5000 miles on it.
One of the spark is damaged from one cylinder.
The intake spring is broken in 3 parts on this cylinder.
The piston is broken in many parts.
about all the other studs is bent.
Other pistons show that they have been striked by valves.
Could an over rev cause this ? Like going in 3 instead of 5 ?
For a supposedly race engine, this sounds strange to overrevs and broke so easily without the RPM limiter preventing such desaster....
GM France is asking for 36.000 euros for replacing engine and are trying to say that this is is fault not to backup with a garanty........
36.000 euros is a crazy amount, knowing a complete Z06 engine is about 15.000 $....
He is under the impression they are trying to screw him.
Hard to tell without looking at it, but sounds like it might be a broken timing chain, which could have been caused by an overrev condition. The car's safety features can only cut ignition or fuel to prevent overreving, there is no way to bend the laws of physics and prevent a mehanical overrev, which could occur if the shifter was forced into a gear that is too low. Transmissions have safeguards to prevent this, but they can be overridden with enough force.
Unless they can prove that it broke while racing, or that the breakage is the result of abuse or engine modifications, the warranty should cover it.
There are alot of factors to be answered before jumping to conclusion, was this car stock, did anyone tuned or made any adjustment to the computer, was everything original around the motor and in the motor? now after answering those question, only then we will be able to know or give an idea as to what cause the damages, and the dealer will look into those things to decide whether the warranty is void.
I have a friend that had the same thing happen. He mistakenly downshifted into 2nd, thinking it was 4th and grenaded the engine. GM replaced the engine. Now comes the question, have any mods been made to the engine that the dealer can stand on his decision? If the car was stock, I would suggest that he contact the equivelent of the Chevy zone office in France for help.

Thats a crazy amount. It would be cheaper to ship it to the USA, get it fixed and then ship it back.
I would bet the import duty & freight on the replacement engine would be a big part of the Euro 36,000 cost if its not covered under warranty. A lot of countries waive the duty if the replacement engine is brought in as a "warranty" replacement but the broken engine has to be shipped back out.
Sounds very much like a mistaken shift and mechanical over rev issue. Your best bet is to immediately contact GM Customer Assistance and get a CASE NUMBER!
They will advise you what should be done and contact the dealer. Without that case number,,,the dealer can walk all over you! Once you have a case number, I bet that they change there tune!
