Default Brake Fluid type 3

All my GM cars/truck(Corvette,CTS,Yukon) call for DOT 3

I went to two different auto stores and all they had was a synthetic DOT 3

Getting ready to flush my Yukon fluid and I am concerned that is setting up potential problems i.e. snythetic

Pardon me but I did not find a thread going into this specific area

Do NOT use synthetic brake fluid in a system specing DOT3 or even DOT 4...seals etc are not designed for synthetic fluids...and you can use DOT 4 in a DOT 3 spec'd car.

What? I thought that all synthetics were compatible with our systems. I also only found syn DOT 3 & 4 fluids. So after the Ranger method of changing with synthetic fluid I've done possible harm? If I take the car to the shop and have them do a full drain/flush of the system will I be OK?
Blue Max asked before he did it, I didn't!

DOT 3 = OK
DOT 4 = OK
DOT 5 = NOT OK
DOT 5.1 = OK

Glycol-based (DOT 3, 4, 5.1)

Silicone-based (DOT 5)

Because DOT 5 is silicone based it is not OK to use in the Vette, DOT 5.1 on the other hand is Glycol based and is OK. Only a minor change in name but a whole different product.

My Bad...total brain fade..I was reading synthetic as silicone...stupid. Synthetic DOT 3 & 4 are fine...it is SILICONE based brake fluid that is a big NO. Sorry for the misleading statement in my first post.

Dot 4 is Dot 3 with a higher boiling point. Dot 3 is extinct, though you can find it. Most bottles say 3/4. Not sure how much of a difference there truly is between standard DOT 3/4 and the synthetic versions. I think they both use the same base, glycol. Synthetic may be more of a marketing tool.

Default dot 3

Well what great information I did find regular Dot 3 at Napa and it took over two quarts to flush that big ole system in the Yukon.

I used the motive products brake bleeding system and they worked with me to get the get the different attachments for all of my different cars from the 65 Vette to the 65 Mustang,o8 Vette,CTS
Looks like the synthetic DOT 3 or 4 would have been OK

Nice going Forum

On the C5 forum, some people have had clutch slave issues when they switched to DOT4. They started hearing a noise that sounds like a dog bark when they depressed the clutch! NO LIE!

When they switched back to DOT3 the noise went away. Has something to do with the lubrication differences between DOT3 & DOT4. If you have switched to DOT 4 and dont hear any DOGS,,,, I guess you golden!

I have DOT4 Syntech in all my cars. Very good fluid! No noises or issues....

At least for the 2008, the owners manual calls for DOT 4 for the clutch.
