Default Engine worth anything?

As some of you know my old motor got trashed. I am having a brand new LS2 put in the car and they want to charge me a 500 core fee to keep the bad motor. I was wondering if the motor is worth anything or should I let them take it? The motor is burnt up from lack of oil.

Son, if it were me, I'd simply let them have it and just get on with my life...you asked...

Let it go. It's not worth keeping or trying to rebuild it.

The block would make an excellent base for a coffee table. I'm thinking glass top?

An engine that failed as your's did is worth right at about $0.00 on the market.

They are banking on they are some salvageable parts left in the engine, if you broke the engine up and sold off the parts you might possibly get your 500, but you would have to find a buyer and possibly wait months or years to do so.

Do the LS2 --> LT1 swap. More power, reliability. Oil pump is hi-perf, flows 50cfm and produces 20# boost per square inch. Top fuel dragsters use LT1 oil pumps and rod bearings.

If you have the money, L98 swap.. much better.

Did they supply the new engine by rebuilding a core engine, in that case they can ask for a core in return, if they built the new engine from new parts typically there is no core charge on a brand new engine. A lot of companies such as Texas Speed, Scoggin Dickey that sell brand new engines with no core charges at all these are out right prices that they sell at. If I supply a new engine built from brand new parts there is no core to deal with unless they just want your engine for what ever reason.

I'd listen to tjwong. He's forgotten more motors than I'll ever see.

If somebody was selling your burned out engine for $500, would you buy it? I know what I'd do.

Donate it to a high school or college automotive program for educational instructional use and deduct it from your income taxes. Should be at least a $1,500 tax deduction I would think.

This is the best advice I've seen for the OP.

Although it had crossed my mind to suggest the old "Blue Flame" engine for nostalgia reasons.

Actually he'll have to buy it first for $500, which means it's worth $500 and that's all he'll be able to deduct from his income taxes. I think it would be tough to convince the IRS that the engine your insurance company just sold you for $500 is really worth $1500.

Somehow I'm not nostalgic for multiple side draft carbs.
