i know they're stronger but are the harder...less likely to be damaged by semi rough handling?

Depends on the heat treat. Either way, aluminum is never very hard.

Forged will bend a lot before breaking while cast will just break.

Forged aluminum is much less pourous than cast and therefore much stronger and not as prone to damage.

thanks! i am hoping they're not as soft as cast. i'm replacing my '07 wheels with some gumbys. it takes nothing to mark up '07, and lower, wheels.
