Default Oil Change

Need an oil change in my C6. I went to the dealer before for my first one. I know what i'm about to ask is probably obvious but should i go to a "oil change shop" or back to the dealer for this one?

For many reasons I'd recommend you learn how to change your own oil. If that's not an option, of the two choices I'd pick the dealership.

I am not in a position to do it myself so I ALWAYS go to the dealer but be ready to pony up some $$$$.

DIY would be best. Too many "Oh, I forgot the plug" stories associated with the oil change shops.

DIY. It's the only way to know it's done right. Even the dealers screw up. How many quarts do they use? C5's are different than C6's and not all C6's are the same. The oil jockeys could use different oil than you would, we read where they over fill and under fill. It's not worth it. I do mine in 20 minuets or less and I'm 71. It cost about $35 to DIY.

as well. I let my old oil drain for hours just to let the old stuff out. I'm way too particular to expect someone else to do something to my satisfaction.

Please for the love of all that is good and holy do it yourself. It is so simple they could teach monkeys to do it. This way it will get done right and there wont be some A-hole driving your car around while you think your oil is getting changed.

Before I had a lift I would take my own oil/filter to the dealer and they would charge about $10 to change it.

You mean that in three years, when I'm 71, I'll be able to change my oil in 20 min instead of the hour it takes me now. I knew there was a good reason people got older.

My brain/body is conditioned so that it takes a nap every time my body is in the prone position. Doesn't matter if I'm on my bed, my couch or my garage floor, under a car.

If you decide not to do it yourself find a mechanic you can trust and go to him every time. Make sure you use a good filter and a good synthetic such as Mobil 1. I change the oil myself and can get er done in twenty minutes easily.

If you don't want to do the change yourself, I recommend the dealer unless you know the oil change shop well enough to trust them to put in the right type & amount of oil, torque the drain plug & filter right, etc. I once heard a story of an oil change shop that put 5 quarts of oil in a Porsche 911 (actual capacity is 10-11 qts). The engine was destroyed by low oil level.

Learing to change your oil is easy. Getting under your corvette to appreciate all the undercariage is awinspiring. I spend about 15 minutes just looking at everything.

Back when we had only ordinary cars, I tried several of the big oil change chains and one purely local outfit. All of them were bad beyond belief.

I did my own this weekend. Royal Purple Oil and Filter. Its satisfying to know you did it yourself and yes to know good quality oil is in there and its done right. At least its on me if its wrong not some lazy oil shop guy.
