Default Remote Starter Button, Compression Test

In preparing to install the 1.8 Crane quick lift roller rockers with dual springs, I performed an initial compression test to establish base line compression readings. Once I complete the Roller Rocker install I will compare post rocker compression readings with my base line readings to insure my valves are closing properly post install. To perform the compression test I purchased a Remote Starter Button from O'Reilly Auto Parts for $12.00. Using the Remote Starter Button allowed me to do everything from the engine bay. I removed Crank Relay #43 from the Fuse Block Underhood. When you remove Relay #43 you will see a small schematic diagram etched on the side of the Relay. The Relay has four spade connectors protruding from its bottom. Each of the four spades has a number (30, 85, 86, 87). Spade 87 connects to the purple wire which runs to the starter solenoid. By applying B+ (battery) to this lead you will operate the solenoid thus engaging the starter. This method does not impact the ECM, Fuel Pump or other systems, only the Starter. I fashioned a small spade which I plugged into slot #87 of Crank Relay #43. I connected one lead of the Remote Start Button to this spade and the other to the + Battery Terminal of the Underhood Fuse Block. Pushing the Remote Start Button turned the LS2 over allowing me to move from cylinder to cylinder taking compression readings. All cylinders read 145 lbs. Tomorrow I will begin changing out the springs and rockers.

The method I used to install the Remote Start Button is very simple and works great. I will use the Remote Start Button as a jogger when adjusting for Zero Lash. I offer this post to others who may have used the search tool as I did when looking for a quick and easy solution to installing a Remote Start Button. I could not find any easy solutions via the search so I consulted my Helms and came up with my own simple solution. Hope others will benefit from my post.

Default A great idea.

What I did was spliced a wire under the fuse box to a pigtale just outside the fuse box ( Purple wire ) forgot which pin # but now if I want to Jog the starter I just simply hook in the remote switch to the pigtale and +
BAT. Works fine for Comp test, setting rockers etc. Glad you mentioned it.

Great post, always good to see the "tricks of the trade" put out there for everybody.

I am curious about your compression reading as it seems a little low assuming you have a stock cam. Did you hold the throttle plate wide open during the cranking portion of the test? If you didn't, your compression test isn't really valid since the piston can't draw enough air past the closed throttle to get full compression.

LSCHLEM - My original search uncovered your initial post where you indicated the effort required to obtain access to the Purple wire which runs from Pin #87 of the Crank Relay to the Starter Solenoid. I didn't want to have to dig for anything so I just fabricated a little spade & pigtail which I plug into slot #87 of the Crank Relay. When I want to use my remote start button I just pop the top of the Underhood Fuse Box, pull Crank Relay #43 and pulg my spade pigtail into slot #87 of the removed Crank Relay. Either process works great. I was just looking for a process that did not require digging for the Purple lead. Your original post helped direct me to where I ultimately ended - Thank you!

Actually, the elevation at which the compression test was conducted (my garage) is 9,100 feet. I was just happy that all cylinders were a match.
