Update
So the service guy calls me and tells me the car won't be ready until tomorrow (it was supposed to be ready yesterday). Apparently they put in the new alternator and guess what, it burned up. So they do some troubleshooting and find the harness from the battery to the starter has a short and the lead to the starter has melted. Kinda like the picture earlier in the thread, although I haven't actually seen my starter. So now I get another new alternator at their expense because the one they installed has a lifetime warranty, a new starter because the lead is melted which the extended warranty covers and the dealer will pick up the deductible because they didn't find the bad harness the first time, and the new harness that I get to pay $200+ for because the extended warranty doesn't cover wiring. I sure hope this fixes the problem. I didn't think it was the alternator in the first place and I told them that but hey they are the experts.

I got my car back.
Sorry I didn't see the last post until now but I did get a look at the starter they removed and it looked almost exactly like the picture in post #4 of this thread, mine was dirtier. I took pictures but the lighting was bad and you really can't see the damage. The similarity is almost scary. How common is this? I'm not sure where in the harness the short was. I was too siked to get my car back after over a week.

The damage in post 4 is most likely simply a loose connection. This increases the resistance which generates heat. The heat loosens the connection more creating more heat. Repeat and you eventually melt the connection as shown.
Good news is by simply making sure that nut is tight the problem can be avoided.
Its a shame that this came lose and caused this problem and after seeing a few of these just here in the forum, its starting to look like a TSB issue for GM/Chevrolet or a possible recall due to the fire potential.

Update
It has been a couple weeks now since my car was fixed and I'm happy to report no problems. Even happier to report that my extended warranty actually did cover the cost of the harness so I received a refund check from the dealer yesterday.
Well, my Monday started off awesome! Same EXACT problem as described by ABQ C6. I too, limped into the dealership just as my power steering went out, raidio shut down! Heres the difference in stories.... As I was in the service station getting the car checked in, all of a sudden started over heating and spewing anti-freeze everwhere! My car is dying. Its at the dealership right now and crossing my fingers something not too expensive! Like the idea of a silinoid on the starter vs an alternator or something worse! Ill post what they diagnose!!

Sounds like you either threw a Main Serpentine belt OR the belt BROKE.
If you threw the belt,,,,,,, The harmonic Damper pulley is most likely TOAST and walked forward or AFT. If thats the case,, break out the credit card and prepare to dish out cash in bundles!!!
Dealer charges an arm and a leg for that repair!! If it were me and I needed a shop to repair that issue, I would find a creditable local shop to repair it.
MAKE SURE that they examine the damper if the belt was thrown.
