Default Help with cam!

I am trying to see what kind of cam i should go with in my c6 ls2 motor automatic with no stall, z06 exhaust with a ram air system, with a tune on it (will do the re-tune after I install the cams) but i was told a 222 duration with a 590 lift but to me that seems small... Was wondering if anyone has any suggestions or what yall have installed in your corvettes. Thanks

I just put a cam in my 07 z51 A6 with a fast intake. My original choice was a 230 239 114 after looking around. When I got to the shop(Blood Enterprises) who built the engines for the worlds fastest production car SST Ultimate Aero. Which is an LS engine. They talked me into a 219 235 114 lsa comp cams. I also didnt want to go stall converter.I absolutely love the all around power and the sound. It feels like if I went anymore it would have really compromise daily driving, which I do alot of. The mods netted me 60 rwhp.
I already had long tube headers, no cats, exhaust, CAI.
Hope this helps. Its a hard decision. Go for all around power and not a peak number

When you stick with a stock stall converter you will be limited to "smaller" cams.

We use our Stinger cam with stock stalls all the time with excellent results. The Stinger is 224/232 113. It is about as big as I would go with a stock stall. If you do go with a stall later It will be that much better.

Give us a call and I can help you out.

With stock 243 casting heads and automatic with stock stall converter, the suggested cam is an excellent choice in my opinion.

As people have pointed out, bigger is not always better. Its the combination.

Now if you had higher flowing aftermarket heads, manual trans or a high stall converter, then, yes, a bigger cam would be fine. But with your stock heads and stall, all a bigger cam will do is hurt low speed torque (worse acceleration under 3000 rpm) and give you a lope at idle which affects low speed driveability.

Don't get sucked into the peak HP trap. Your car will only spend a very small time in that rpm range (over 6,000 rpm). Its the most power under the curve that really matters.

Here is an article comparing various cams on an LS3. Its not exactly the same set up as your car, but its good insight in any case.

Here's a few questions that would help in getting you in the right direction.

1) Are there plans for further mods...
a) improve the intake side of the engine (heads)
b) raise the compression
c) Stall converter or diff gear ratio change

2) What driving style
a) Road racing
b) Drag Racing
c) Weekend toy
d) Daily driver

Assuming no further mods and intent to maintain your reliable daily driver status, then an asymmetrical cam with....

1) intake side duration of 220-224
2) exhaust side duration of 224 -232
3) valve lifts for both intake and exhaust .570-.600
4) LSA of 114+2
5) Good valve springs
6) Good tuning

Remember, it is real easy to "over-cam" and nearly impossible to "under-cam".

I do have plans for further mods, but I am a college student so I do have to save up thats why I am just going with a cam for now. This car is my daily car and I drag race it on my free time. I appreciate your time and opinion on this, seems like the guy was right on the cam size.

Spin recommends the 224XFI/224XFI 115 LSA for an LS2/A6. I'm looking for the "right" cam too.

Oh yeah, and staying up in the 230's on the exhaust side will get you that nice lope that we all love so much

Well I am taking my car to the track this weekend before I put in the cam so hopefully I will see a good improvement once I put it in. I appreciate all the information I'm getting!

230+ exhaust duration is not a determining factor in how 'lopey' a cam is at idle.

This run was against a 2009 AMG Mercedes that was running 12.5s constant and he said it was stock?? Oh well still got him

I am in the Silver Corvette. My best 2 runs before I put the cam in, it was ugly out though was drizzling before, and I was on street tires. I will also let yall know what cam i put in and what i run with it. Track was 95 degrees and 67% humidity.

I have what you own--(2007 C6--A6 )-this year I installed a----220/224---581 lift---112 lsa cam---with a tune--i gained --42 rwhp & 40# tq.--runs perfect--did not affect mpg----gain was thru the whole power band, 700--750 rpm idle. I also have kooks headers & X pipe---total--406 rwhp--------

Would that grind work well on a LS3 A6?
