Recently did a stereo install. Just a Nav unit no bass or powered speakers. However this nav does require a tap to the pos. terminal on the battery. I'm noticing that my voltage meter reads around 14-15 which is a couple ticks to the right instead of straight up center. Is this normal?
The ONLY accurate voltage reading is directly on the battery terminals. Take a reading there with a Volt Meter and see what it reads. 13.5 - 14.7 is normal depending on a LOT of factors:
Battery temp
State of Charge
Battery Age
Load on the system.
The alternator charges the battery THRU the stater solenoid. Make sure that the solenoid connections are clean, good condition and tight.
Go the last place your were last. Disconnect the stereo positive leads and see if it goes back to the normal reading.
Also, in order to charge a 12V battery, the alternator must supply a voltage even higher than that to force current into the battery instead of away from it.
