Did you ever get anywhere with this? I have been playing with some solid models to see what might work for adapters ect.; but find no real "answers" to the subject. I have a 2005, have passed up two built 4L80e's in the past year. One was less than $2000 with converter and control. I just feel there has to be an econo. solution for the guy that is the d.y.i. type instead of pay to play type.
ive been throwing this idea around myself. i bet i could do it for less than 5k using all oem parts, then id have my stock manual stuff to sell.
i too got quotes from rpm, one for 15 and another for a little over 8k, but they kept all my parts. i understood it being parts only, now if that included labor then i would say deal in a second.

I hear what you are saying. I have to wonder how much power a basic 4L80e will really hold. I know that they share a lot of common parts with the 400 and that gives hope. Heck when you consider that just about any High School shop class can build a 400 where it will hold 800-1000h.p how bad could a 4l80e be? The whole "Its a Vette jack the price up" really sucks. I even looked at the 9" option; but it required to much trans tunnel cutting for me. I would make my own; but even that kit seems to be pricejacked for the Vette owners. Where does the whole 6k come in as reasonable is beyond me. Back to the transmission deal; I am not sure what has happened in the transmission world. For Pete's Sake it is a flippin 3/4 ton truck transmission not some aftermarket billet cased box. Why should it cost any more to do this than it does to adapt the transmission to some weird 4X4 engine trans/transfer/case combo that can be had for around $600-$1000 depending on what you wanting to adapt?
