How do you pull the code history on a '08 M6 coupe?

Your best bet is to purchase a Diagnostic Scanner that is C.A.N. Bus compliant.
I personaly have an ACTRON CP-9180 and it does a good job. It also has the ability to view O2 sensor operation and all the sensors in live data. You can read and clear the DTCs.

Found out that it cant see the BODY DTCs but, if you get a more advanced ACTRON scanner they can! My CP-9180 was $130 from amazon.com. The more advanced ones are about $220.

Will the scanner read a complete history of all the codes the vehicle has ever experienced?

Why would you want to do that??????????? Ever try to diagnosis a problem with 50 DTCs present??

Once the battery is disconnected, all the codes get erased. when the battery is reconnected, numerous spurious DTCs get set.

Just erase the old HISTORY DTCs and see what comes back. Codes tha are CURRENT are the ones to worry about. History Codes clear them selves after a period of time.

Approximately 3 weeks from now I will be purchasing an '08 3Lt M6 coupe. I am concerned about the Active Handling system problems being present in this vehicle. If I could pull all the codes, I would know whether or not the Active Handling system has or had issues.

I personally think pulling the battery cable to erase codes is not a good idea. For one thing, it erases the LTFT. And the history codes will be erased which could help diagnose a problem. After so many cycles of no problem, the codes go away by themselves.

You need a code reader that is CAN BUSS compliant and able to read the Powertrain & BODY CODES to diagnose your potential purchase.

Even if you possess a $1000 Code reader,, if someone has erased the previous DTCs,, there will be ZERO evidence of any issues if the issue causing the problem doesn't have an issues again.

So,,,,,,,,,,,,, Unless your potential purchase has had a problem since the last DTC erase or is having the issue currently, you will NOT KNOW.

That being said,, a C5 or C6 with a weak battery will set numerous spurious DTCs and cause all sorts of random issues

IF,,,,, you want to know what your examining is working properly,, read the DTCs before you take the car for a drive. Write down ALL the DTCs/ CLEAR ALL the DTCs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Take the car for a spirited drive. MOVE the tilt & Telescopic steering wheel Thur ALL positions. Rub the HVAC thru ALL MODES.

At the end of the test drive, read ALL DTCs and see if you have any!

Great feedback! I have a new to me 06 that I would like to check and examine on an ongoing basis. Any suggestions on a good reader - but inexpensive for the 2006??????? (suposedly the dealer has a listing of all the recent codes prior to sale - but I did not acquire them at the time or yet. It's a long story.)

Not trying to step on other thread; only enhance actually.

No such thing as a good reader that is inexpensive. The OBD II readers only handle engine related DTCs which only make up about 50% of the total number of DTCs that could exist. Of the remaining 50% only the ABS and Ride control functions will display a message to alert you to an issue. My personal experience is an OBD II reader isn't worth the investment. Been working on 3 C5/C6s and 5 other GM cars for 14 years now and just had my first emissions code when my Grandson's 02 Intrigue threw a secondary air injection code. All previous codes were ABS, ride control and other issues.

Bill C and Bill D.....

Thanks for feedback!

(I've already purchased this / challenged on time travel due to being in a hurry for a Nuero Surgeon visit on the biggest day of my life.)

I guess my best alternative now is to try and get the dealer to print the existing codes / erase (guess they know how - I will have to look into) and perform the spirited drive BC suggests and aquire new codes. I guess this would limit my $ outlay for time being too.

Another related thread I started seeking info....
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...ns-please.html

Any and all feedback welcomed!!!!! Hope I get my car today!!!!!!
