2005 C6 Overheating!

2005 C6 Overheating!
Please Help, I am a new C6 owner and my 2005 was overheating. i added 3 jugs of dexcool 50/50 and it ran fine, but the tank still fit more so i added 1 of just water. how much should this hold?? now i dont know if its running ok because i keep adding to it or if it was that empty. i just had it serviced(oil changed) and they said nothing. there are no water spots or signs of leaking. but the temp hits upwards of 210, 220 and once even 240..i know it was not running this hot before.. no mods other than corsa exhaust and vortex intake. any suggestions of what the problem could be please advise!

Please be more specific: Did you drain the system or did you just find it that low? If you found it that low, you have a major leak somewhere. If you drained it and refilled, then you probably have an air pocket in the system. Let us know what the situation is.

adding 3 jugs of 50/50 dexcool sounds like a leak!
3 jugs = 12 quarts = full capacity of system.
when i drained my system and refilled, it only took about 2.5 jugs + several topping off after each drive.

have your cooling fan system checked. the fan connection at the controller is notorious for the center wire burning out causing the fan not to operate properly. also have the fan table checked and see if it has been modified from stock. some "tuners" have the fan commanded on 90% making the fan run way to much and burning the connection up, fan motor, etc. good luck

yes i believe it is leaking... lol yes by jug i ment gallon (that is a unit of measurement in north carolina :-). no i did not drain, it just became empty. after filling i was constantly checking for leaks, i noticed none but by your answers it must be a leak. i will have it pressure tested. no white smoke..really 220 is normal engine temp? ...wondering what the $$$ damage will be...

If you lost that much and don't see any signs of leaks you must have a blown head gasket or internal water jacket cracked somewhere. I'd check to see if there is evidence of coolant in the oil and/or exhaust

(absolutely)..... if you've lost that much coolant & have not drained the system nor found any external leak, then you definitely have a head gasket problem. Pull the dipstick & check for coolant in the engine oil. Get to a reputable shop soon as you can. Also, if you just bought the C6, you might want to go back to the Seller & make a stink.

You have a serious engine problem, don't drive the car at all! Call the dealer and have a flatbed truck come and tow your car to the dealer for what sounds to be failed head gaskets.
My 2006 Headgasket failed as well, unfortunately I was doing some spirited driving and #1 piston exploded when it hydrolocked and the connected rod fell down and jammed the adjacent connecting rod and pushed it through the side of the block.
20,000 miles on stock engine and 1 year out of warranty and GM would not even sell the dealer the engine at cost (GM made money because of defective head gasket). Paid full price for engine and install and 2,000 miles later it's running strong as ever.

Pull the small coolant line on the front of the driver's side head. Put your mouth over the reservoir opening and blow until coolant comes out of the line you removed. It's the easiest way to get the air out. Read it on this forum a long time ago and worked great. It is surprising how just a little air can cause very quick overheating.

I lost a lot of coolant when I did the tstat swap so I just ran the car with the cap off, and continued to add coolant and squeezed the hose.

The easiest way to get the coolant system bled is to remove the radiator hose off the front of the water pump and pour the coolant straight down that hose into the radiator. Then when coolant starts out of the water pump reattach the hose and do a few bleeds of the coolant plugs on the cylinder heads and you are done.

Are you saying only anti-freeze comes in jugs(since they hold 4 quarts) and not other liquids?
A jug is not a unit of measure, it's a container.
