I have a friend with an '07 C6 auto trans (w/paddle shifting) that he has only had for 3 days...beautiful, clean low miles. Well today he had a problem and it's that the tranny will only go into neutral and drive, this happened without any hint of impending problems. It also will not go into sport mode and the owner seems to think it's rejecting those associated functions that require depressing the brake pedal first. All input welcomed
Was he driving it hard, hitting the rev limiter at all (while shifting with the paddles) just prior to this happening by any chance?
Either way, before he takes it to a shop or dealership for diagnostic work there's one thing he can try first.
Disconnect the battery and let it sit overnight, reconnect it the next day and see how it reacts, driving it around easy until everything relearns and such.
It likely will not fix his problem but then he has nothing to lose by trying.
He might also still be under the original powertrain warranty as well (5 year/100k miles)?
My friend has checked everything he could check, fuses etc, brake lights work and the engine starts and runs. But it still will only go into neutral or drive...the positions that don't require pushing the shifter release button and when he tries to push the button for other gears it won't push down. He's a very accomplished 40yr motorcycle mechanic but isn't familiar with C6 Corvettes and/or this particular problem. Is this electrical or mechanical, again any insight is appreciated.

Oh ok, that now sounds a little different than what I was originally talking about.
I think he might have broken his shifter button/lockout switch, it's not very common but it has been reported by some of the A6 owners (though mine has been perfect since day one). I think it requires the purchase/replacement of an entire shifter assembly unfortunately.
If you (or him) do a search on here under 'A6 shifter' or 'broken automatic shifter' you might find some good/useful info.
You can disconnect the shift cable from the transmission and see if its still stuck,, If it is,, its the shifter or the cable. Most likely a problem with the shifter. Pull out the shifter and see if you can fix whats wrong with it. If it shifts disconnected, there could be something wrong in the trans.
He took it back to the dealership where he had only three days ago bought it and without a warrantee they paid for it. It required a new shifter assembly and labor...$600
