I'm interested to hear what you guys have to say about replacing the mufflers with exhaust tubing. Temporarily. I have plans to do a big cam, headers, etc. and am of course going to do an exhaust system. Id like to just order everything at once and do it all in one shot since this is my DD and I'm very busy I'm going for minimal downtime. So until then, is a muffler delete obnoxious? I've had it done on a ctsv and loved it, but I know the Corvette and ls2 will sound altogether different. I don't mind if its a little loud, but does it sound like trash? Just curious if any of you have canned the mufflers and how does it sound. Couldn't really find any decent quality vids on YouTube. Thanks for your input!
See that's what I was interested in because on the ctsv it was also not overly loud and sounded really good at wot... thanks for your input.
I was a supporting tuner on this forum and do installs at a shop. I have been through this with dozens of corvettes. If your only lokking for opinions that support what you want to hear then you werent looking for opinions but rather someone to affirm what youre already going to do.
It has serious drone in the car at all RPM's and it gains no power. I heard every exhaust system, dyno'ed every combo you can think of and its noise with no power gain.
Even people who got the STS turbo kit with cats intact cant take the drone and change out the kit. The turbos on that kit replace the mufflers so they act as a muffler. Im just relaying what I've witnessed many times over. I should point out that a cam is the biggest variable here. A big cam with no mufflers will be way louder. Many people who are fine with an aftermarket exhaust are pushed over their limit once they cam the car. I ran a Z06 exhaust on my car (959rwhp) and with the cuttouts open it was offensive.
If you liked it on a CTS then you will likely be fine with it on a covette. I dont like loud but then I'm also relaying many other's people discomfort with the mod. Police arent going to like it either. I was one of them too. You may just be one of those guys who like cherry bomb mufflers or open headers, in which case I cant speak for you. Im just trying to keep people from making the swap and then going back to a NPP exhaust after they had enough drone on the hiway. Its your money.

@Spinmonster, that was actually the answer I was looking for. I'm actually not a fan of overly loud exhaust, and what you said about the canned cars being louder... that's why I want to wait until I do the cam to do the full exhaust. I don't want it to sound like an ALMS car or something. On a loudness scale of 1-10 I like in the 6-7 range. And I like a nice smooth tone. On the ctsv it wasn't very loud, so I didn't mind it. On previous c6's I have had borla cat backs on all, high flow cats on all, and different header setups. Also never had a cammed car either. Which is why I'm kinda curious as to what will sound like trash and what will be tolerable and sound good. If it really is obnoxious I'm not against just driving the stock exhaust until it hits the shop for cam and stuff, it was just a thought on how to not waste money until then. But trust me, I live in the south, and I hear straight piped trucks all day every day and I hate that sound. And I'm really glad you put the input about drone in. THAT, I hate. And really deters me from considering this. My skills are pretty extensive and have tig welder and band saw at hand, so it was a consideration. Thank you for such insight. I may still try it just bc I'm curious, but id also like to hear your recommendations for exhaust at the time of the cam install.
@HOXXOH - I listened to the video. To each his own but I'm going to support the previous post by storm. I just don't care for that now that I've heard it... thanks alot for all of your help guys!
Spinmaster* not storm.... hahaha autocorrect.... I'm glad I saw that video! Wow. I'd definitely have to do some kind of mufflers. The ctsv didn't sound ANYthing like that. Big difference. And not that I'm bashing you. If that's your taste or anyone else's, so be it. Just not my taste. Might try to find a used cat back of some sort and resell after the cam swap and build, and @spinmaster, if you have any clips of the Z exhaust on a cammed car I would be interested in hearing it. May just do that from the get go.
Also anyone that could recommend a cam would be appreciated. I'm looking for a fairly aggressive idle, but what's most important to me is more mid to top pull. That's really the point of me doing it above all else... any suggestions?
i've been looking for something like this but for a c6 z06. something mandrel bent with hangers in stock locations and stock tips, no resonators. what company makes them?
Thats just some guy who bought the cam. I have no idea what mods he has. Of the 20 or so cars that used it that Im aware of, it made a low of 478 and a high of 504rwhp. 75% of cars using it seem to be around 490rwhp.
Its a custom grind that you order from comp cams and its only 4 degrees overlap so it drives great. I posted the sound clip to demo the chop. I make nothing from you buying it.
Nice. I can tell we have similar tastes... if that car was a little quieter that would be my ideal setup. Just curious. Do you have any dyno results of that car or one similar with that cam? Be interested to see the torque/HP curve. Sounds nice regardless! And what do I do? Call comp and tell them I want an ls2 spinmonster cam? Haha
@MarkRx - I haven't seen anyone that makes anything like that. I could be wrong, but to the best of my knowledge everything has at least a resonator/muffler apparatus inline... this appears to me to be a custom job. Like I said, I could be wrong. But if you're interested in this I know for a fact that almost any exhaust shop that utilizes mandrel bending can fabricate this. I don't know your location but I know a guy in northern GA that does amazing custom mandrel exhaust...

I'm curious, doesn't the Z06 (3") and the NPP (2 1/2") exhaust accomplish the same thing when the valves are open? Aren't they essentially straight pipes bypassing the muffler when you open the valves or am I missing something.
Is so, why not use one of these exhausts and have the ability to close the valves if and when you have the need/desire.
it still goes thru a canister with a baffle muffling the sound.
i have not seen anything like this in 8 years for the C6 with the exception of B&B bullets which have a slight resonator and IMO they are way over priced at $1500+ for a couple feet of pipe!
i did it to my c6 and love it..i currently have stock headers and cats just a muffler delete exhaust..im going to get some obx headers with no cats soon and will be loving how much louder it will sound..here is my vette:
Cuttouts net you 5-6hp so it sounds rediculous to annoy yourself and those around you for something that does nothing for performance.
by net..do u mean gain or lose 5-6 hp? i plan on running obx headers with no cats and just running complete straight pipes..im not a fan of buying name brand exhaust when exhaust give u minimal gains on a vette..i have always been a fan of custom exhaust..thanks!
It's the definition of obnoxious. Do you have neighbors? Under power it's ear-splitting and you'll deservedly attract the attention of law enforcement.
