I just picked up a Z06 from a dealer and did not notice a problem with 5th gear during the test drive. Whenever I am cruising between 40 and 50 MPH with no load on the engine the gear shift **** stays steady but as soon as I give it a little gas the shift **** starts to vibrate at a pretty high frequency. Need to know what I am looking for? All other gears do not do this except 5th gear under load. The vehicle does have a warranty.
the Z shift box is mounted metal to metal, the regular coupe is mounted on rubber bushings. You can buy the bushings from various vendors instead of buying the entire box. You may also consider a new short throw shifter while you have it apart. Prepare to spend about an hour on the fix.
The dreaded noisy Z06 Shifter! Don't worry, it's not uncommon and usually fixed by replacing the hard mount shifter assembly with the rubber mount style: PN 2583-3572 @ your local Chevy parts counter.
But since you just bought the car and it's under warranty just head back to your dealer and let them fix it.

It's not noisy just that the top of the shifter **** vibrates forward to backward only when I put a load on the transmission and only in 5th gear. Remove the load and the vibration is gone, zip. Very strange.
The **** vibrates, but no noise? That is a little different. Usually the complaint is a very irritating rattling/buzzing noise that is throttle and rpm sensitive.
Could be a cracked or broken **** maybe? The **** itself is just a slip fit plastic piece held on with one screw in the side at the bottom. Take it off and check it out.
But seriously, if you're under warranty take it in and you will probably end up with a new shifter (not a bad thing in itself) and a new **** too before it's all over with.
Actually, the hard mount shifter, pn 2582-3571, was used on Z06s into the first part of the '09 model year. I know this 'cuz my '09 came with one. Wonder if it was used on early ZR1s?
Anyway, at some point in the '09 production run the factory switched to the rubber mount shifter, pn 2583-3572, in the Z06. Same part as used in all reg. C6s since day one.
Richie is off by a little on the discontinuation of the solid mount box. It happened during the '09 model year. Early '09 Zo6s were built with it. The proof is in my garage. My car was built in Dec '08 and it came from the factory with the "Z06" labeled hard mount box, pn 2582-3571, yada yada...
The rubber mount shifter has not changed and as Richie says is the only one in use today.
This is the kind of stuff that keeps NCRS judges busy for hours!
