Default A6 trans running hot throwing P0741 code

I have a 2007 LS2 with a rebuilt trans (maybe 3000 miles on it) to handle 600 rwhp and a new converter installed. It recently started to throw the P0741 code (torque converter clutch system - stuck off) but the trans would shift fine (just locked out of 5th and 6th until the car was restarted) and operate at normal temps. I made a 1400 mile round trip this weekend and the trans fluid temp would get up to maybe 220 on steep hills but normally it'd be between 198 and 210 so I think that's normal. Today I was cruising around 75 mph on pretty flat roads in mid-80s weather and the trans temp got up to about 230 degrees. Like I said, I was just cruising and not getting on it and the temp shot up pretty quickly. I babied it home with the trans fluid temp hovering around 217. The car throws the code only on 5th or 6th grear (in D or paddle shifting in A) usually on inclines/hills. It almost feels like the trans doesn't downshift at the right time and it throws the code. Any thoughts on this?

Based on the fact your trans temps are that high, most likely your torque converter clutch is shot. A P0741 code indicates that the converter is supposed to be locked up and either isn't (if the solenoid fails to activate) or the solenoid did activate but it detects excessive slip.

While most will agree that 198-210 is normal (for that kind of power and on a hot day at least) or acceptable for 'non racing' regular driving conditions, I personally wouldn't be comfortable with it.
I start to panic when my A6 even hits just 180 but that's just me of course.
I think most will agree that 230 is definitely too high regardless though.

On a mid-80 degree day cruising on the freeway, my torque converter will lock and transmission temps will gradually drop to between 160 and 180 degrees from around 210-220 degrees over a period of some minutes. This is on a base coupe without a transmission cooler.

So, it does sound like your converter is not locking up.

I honestly know next to nothing about this stuff but since the converter is also new, how likely is it that the clutch is already shot? Is it possible that the selenoid itself is either working intermittently or has failed?

If the converter settings weren't changed to keep it from locking up at WOT, it wouldn't take long to kill the clutches.

The clutch material used in a stock converter can withstand being locked up at WOT but unfortunately that isn't the case with most aftermarket converters.

Any aftermarket converters that can be locked at wot and stand up.

I have a 3200 Yank and have not had any issues with heat (knock on wood!)

Keep us posted on what you find.

Well, I'm sure ECS will make this right. I'm not in a habit of rebuilding transmissions every 3000 miles.

Interested as well, I will be sending my A6 to someone this winter for upgrades and a good converter.

I have a Yank 3600 and I have no issues with heat either. Over 180 is pretty rare. Sounds like a converter problem.

Over 180 is not at all rare in the South. My cruising temps are around 176. If I get off the interstate for a break, and then accelerate rapidly on the on ramp when I get back on the temp will easily get between 190 and 210, and then it won't drop below 190 even if I cruise the interstate for another 2.5 hours. It has been this way consistently since brand new and now at 75k miles.

So, here's the update or lack thereof. Car's been away for over a month. Coverter was replaced last week but the trans didn't feel right during the test drive so I still have no clue what the problem is. Still at the shop. Happy Thanksgiving in case I don't have another update before then........

I think that would be much better use of your time than publicly antagonizing an irate customer. But what do I know.....

GOTCHA!!!!

Some things never get old.. the car was supposed to be finished Monday morning, but Tommy has been out sick. I have seen him work in near death conditions so if he stayed home he is SICK. It happens to the best of us. He said he will be back in tomorrow and the car is waiting on his lift for him, so expect a call in the afternoon. Please keep in mind that we are repairing a problem at no charge that we did not create, we are doing our best.
