Default Disabled my shift lock...finally.

It's been getting worse and worse and after being stuck for half an hour on Saturday I decided enough is enough and disabled the shift lock on Sunday. Took about an hour. Did not have to take the console all the way off. Only disconnected the active handling switch harness and the passenger seat belt light then propped the console up on the e-brake handle. The red thing is propping the shifter cover up.

Here's an updated picture.

I guess if I drag raced my car the 1/4 mile times would matter to me, but I don't. So I stick with my statement that I am happy I have a M6.

I'm totally happy with my A4. This was not a tranny problem. There is a little solinoid that locks the shifter in park until you step on the brake. That solinoid goes bad and you cant get out of park. Someone on here, I cant remember who, found a work around that involves strapping the locking pin back so it cant engage and lock the shifter. Simple procedure and makes it impossible for the shifter to get stuck in park any more.

Yeah because trapping 133mph is where it's at. Call me when you trap in the 160 range like my M6 does.

I had this problem on my 05 A4. I could not get at the locking tab to drill a hole in it for a tie back. I placed the round section of a tube key over the solenoid shaft to keep the shaft in the extended position, thus keeping the lock tab out of the way. I cut the tube key down to length and crimped it around the shaft. This is a permanent solution. Just remember to always keep your foot on the brake when starting the car. Total cost for the tube key was $3.00.

Your welcome! There is something you can try before you do this fix. I used to be able to get mine to release by pushing the shifter forward with foot on brake until you hear it unlock. Then push the button and pull it back into gear. It got to the point on mine where that didn't work either so I went ahead and disabled the shift lock.

Yes my personal situation is I'm completely stuck in park.

Does anybody have a reverse lock solenoid replacement part number?

The solenoid can not be replaced unless you can find a used shifter and pull it off from there. If you took your car to the dealer to have this fixed they would replace the entire shifter assembly for between $400-$600.

they dont sell just the noid you have to replace the whole shifter, they say you can put the car in acc mode and still shift it out of park, it didnt work for me. I like it better with the latch cut broke or zip tied as you can now have the car in neutral with the power off

The 2006 -2013 A6 does not work this way. The A6 cannot be taken apart and is a sealed unit. The A6 does not have the locking issue as the A4 had as far as I know.
I just had my '05 and my friends '07 done today. We snipped off the offending part and it took about 35 minutes for each car...WE'RE BOTH REALLY HAPPY CAMPERS NOW!!!

I did this "fix" on my 2005 a couple of years ago.

I offered to help Sparky (ufso) to do the same "fix" to his 2005.

A mutual friend of Sparky and I was having the same problem with his 2007 A6.

After reading several forum posts about the 2006+ A6 shifter being different, I was not sure if we would be able to do the same "fix" with the 2007, but we were willing to give it a try.

Turns out ....the 2007 A6 shifter has the same solenoid controlled latch that fails in the 2005 A4 shifter and the "fix" was the same.

I'm using the word fix in quotes ("fix") because by doing this "fix" you are disabling the shifter lock mechanism which is considered a safety feature (do so at your own risk). The "correct" fix would be to spend a lot of money to replace the whole shifter assembly (that could fail again).

To get to the

Can you share how you did the fix on the A6? If so, you will be the first to ever have the fix documented. pics would also be a great help.

Many thanks
Two helpful hints that I didn't see anyone else post:

#1 - After you remove the radio surround, as seen here:

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...l-removal.html

You also need to remove the shifter boot housing, there are (2 prong) release clips located on the shifter boot housing (one towards the dash side and the other towards the center console side). To release these clips, you need to pinch the tabs together while pulling up on the shift boot at the same time. We used 2 small flat head screw drivers at both sides of the tabs to push the tabs together.

Here is a drawing I made to "hopefully" explain this better:

#2 – Make sure the orange shift indicator (the indicator that shows you what gear you are in when you shift gears) is working properly before you reassemble everything back together. The shift indicator connects to the shifter via a small round tab that is inserted into a hole in a plastic part located on the side of the shifter shaft. It will likely come un-done when you pull up on the shift boot. It’s easy to put back together, but it can also be easily overlooked during reassembly. The red arrow below shows where the shift indicator comes disconnected from the shifter.
