Here is a PDF or removing the radio surround console that I made from previous threads and posts from forum members. Note: The Auto and Manual console is the same. Sometimes the pics disappear from threads, hence why I saved them to the PDF.
I only had to disconnect the traction control button so I could raise the console up high enough to do the job. The console does not need to be taken all the way off and no other connectors had to come off.

Prying the trim piece loose really isn't the challenge. It's going to be all of the electrical switch connectors in back that all seem to have varying means of unlocking from the wiring harnesses. I did my 07 A6 vert a month ago and that was my great frustration.
I drilled a small hole in the pawl and ran a wire to the inside if the center console, right by the power outlet. This allows the locking mechanism to function as designed, but gives me a mechanical override to move the pawl whenever needed.
Snagle,
I was starting to have problems with Park on my 07 and so I followed your advice for a mechanical override. It works perfect - thanks for the advice.
I was proceeding slowly and carefully but it was certainly less than 2 hours. I am sure that I could do it in less than 60 minutes the next time. I had already done my disassembly research beforehand.
This is easily accomplished in an hour. I did it in less than that and I took the radio out to hook up wiring for an external amp. Only tricky part is making sure you are removing connectors properly. Some were tricky.
One other thing, I noticed that in post # 1 and in post #18 two different guys are wiring back two different pieces. Which is the better piece to wire back?

No, it's the same piece. When you remove the console you will see the how the locking pawl gets in the way and how it works.
Is there a thread on here that shows how to remove the console? I remember seeing one but I can't find it now. Do you have to remove the shifter ****?
I gotta get this done.
Thanks
Look at post # 41 for radio surround console removal.
No, you do not have to remove the shifter ****. The shifter boot can be lifted out of the way towards the shifter **** to get access to the locking pawl.

Good luck.
I can confirm that. I tried to remove the **** with no success. It was unnecessary.
It's been getting worse and worse and after being stuck for half an hour on Saturday I decided enough is enough and disabled the shift lock on Sunday. Took about an hour. Did not have to take the console all the way off. Only disconnected the active handling switch harness and the passenger seat belt light then propped the console up on the e-brake handle. The red thing is propping the shifter cover up.
