Previously I considered adding a 4:10 rear end to my C5 ( which has been sold).
Reading comments of various member who had or wanted this gear ratio, a comment was made "renders 1st gear useless".
Can someone explain this comment.
Thank you.
At the dragstrip they are a great addition in helping to launch the car, on the street they aren't my choice unless you're running a drag radial all the time as I could spin 1st and 2nd at will when I ran them on normal "street" tires which I prefer to be on as to not sacrifice lateral Gs...R compounds would hook 2nd when warm on a good surface in a straight line, but of course don't have any better life than drag radial. I'd figure out your goals or desires to see if they're a good match, hope that helps. FWIW I've run MM6/3.42, MM6/4.10, MZ6/3.42, MN6/4.10, MN6/3.15 and now on MN6/3.42
Thanks for the correction Dennis. For some reason A6 comes to mind when I talked about the C6. I hear that A4 is better, but I dont want to start that topic
If you drag race you want the most gear you can get to get off the line and climb the acceleration curve as quickly as possible. Any racer will tell you the second 660 is just going for a ride, the first 330 is where it matters.
I have had 4.10's and 2.97 first for years now, and I attribute to my stock OE clutch surviving 494 passes and 76000 daily driver miles to the 4.10 gears and 2.97. I still get 1.4's at will. I've posted up half a dozen videos in a thread if you don't believe me.
I don't spin any more on the street than anyone else, I can spin, sure, but I don't. I find it easier to control spin with 4.10's as the car "catches up" to the spinning tires more easily.
I always recommend gears for a manual Vette. It makes the car feel like it lost 500 lbs.
Here's a post I did years ago to show on a dyno sheet why the car feels so much quicker with gears. You have more HP at any given road speed.
This is the technical answer and a good and proven.
The laymen's answer is simple, it is more fun. Gear's are a toque multiplier.
You will take a hit on the fuel mileage but not drastically. A couple mpg's.
Pitufina, great that you can stay in touch from the Middle East! I guess Corvetteforum isn't on the restricted site list.
Try gears first and take out the clutch pedal spring. Free to try. If that doesn't work Justin is recommending Mantic based on his experience.
I had gears on my 05 C6 and loved them. Joe...Great to see you are still here helping folks with advice. I've been hanging out in the Z forum too long.
