Hey guys, Been taking the Grand Sport out to the road course track more often and I feel bad chewing through the expensive Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires I got for my ZR1 wheels, I do have my original Grand Sport wheels, should i toss some track tires on those or get smaller wheels? What would you guys recommend?
Double edge sword with R6's, since with the increase grip of the tire, will start going through brakes faster instead.
Now the next question, are you just over driving the car past it limits and burning up tire that way, or driving the car within it limits to not just burn up the tires, and only get a few track sessions out of the car instead? I state this since track days will chew up tires and brake when you are driving the car to the edge lap after lap, and if you are going to play, you have to pay.
As for a less expensive track tire, might want to look into Kumho XS's. Granted they are are as slick in the rain at Sports Cups, but a good less expensive track tire that you can still drive to the track with them on the car.
I bought a second set of OEM GS wheels and mounted Toyo R888s on them. My original wheels have MP Super Sports mounted to keep the street driving quiet and comfortable.
The challenge is finding reasonable track tires (cost and traction) for the 19" rears. A lot of GS and Z06 guys run 18s all around as a result, with of course the rear wheels being wider than the fronts.
The Auto-x and Road Racing section of the forum has some good discussion on tire/wheel combos.
It really depends on what kind of tires you plan to run. If you want to start with a sticky street tire like NT05 or R888, you should just stay with your stock wheels. If you plan to run slicks, than going to an 18" all around would be a better choice.
