I don't remember becasue it has been to long ago. but if the rotor is off and the new studs are the same length, you should not need to drill anything. Let me look in the shop manual.
UPDATE: Shop manual says to remove the hub. I must be wrong.......
Thanks Bill. I will take a look at doing this later today as I still have the car on the lift from doing a diff and converter swap. I pulled the rotor yesterday, but there was no way to see the back side of the axle flange because the parking brake is in the way, so I would either need to pull the parking brake or drill the hole. Kinda stupid that GM didn't put a hole in the backing plate (maybe with a rubber plug in it to prevent dirt getting into the parking brake). That would make changing the rear studs a breeze, but there's a lot more that falls into that category...
I bought a full set of replacement studs from Napa yesterday. They are fully threaded. Here's what they look like:
Random off-topic question of the day - does anyone know what the name of and specification of the washer/nut thing that holds the rotor back in the above picture? My car never had them, and after switching to napa blanks (instead of oem) the rotors always want to move around after removing a wheel...
I look in the parts catalog and they don't show a part number for it. I did see them at an Ace Hardware store one day in the nut and bolt section when I was looking for something else. Each Ace is independently owned, so one may have it and others may not.

The shop manual is wrong -- there is no need to remove the hub for stock-length stud replacement (unless you are getting paid by the hour! )
Again, I and many others have proven this via personal experience.

They are called Tinnerman clips. Feel free to find replacements, but they are totally unnecessary, and only used by the factory to keep the rotors from falling off while the assemblies are being moved around the factory. In fact, it is recommended that they be removed if aftermarket wheels are mounted, as in some cases, they can interfere with proper wheel fitment against the rotor.
