I noticed a rattling noise coming from under my car and went by a transmission shop. Once they drove it, I was told that it was my torque tube and the bearings were going out. Was just wondering if anyone has replaced a torque tube and could offer my any suggestions on what to do or who to get to fix it. I have a 2009 Corvette base model.
I pulled mine out and rebuilt it when I was swapping new trans and converter. If you do a search, there's a few threads on this subject that will give ya info you need. IIRC, it's two bushings and three bearings is all that's needed. I ordered my bearings offline and the bushings from a German bmw motorsports website, as they are supposed to be better than what's available at parts house.
Okay, thanks for that information. I may see if someone could possibly help me repair it. I wasn't sure if a dealership could repair it at a "reasonable rate".
That sounds a lot better than the $2000 plus quote that I've gotten. I believe I will request that he bearings be replaced instead of the whole tube. Thanks for that info!
Depending on you SKILLs and or desire to save cash, its a rather involved repair. Its doable and not all that COMPLEX.
I agree, the STEALERSHIP will only install a new TT and will not repair the old one.
The entire drivetrain will be out so, you might consider other drive train maintenance items that should be addressed especially if you have a MN6 Car.
One will be differential output shaft seal replacement.
Again, its a C5 post but pretty much the same seals:
I second that, whining sound from driver rear wheel well area. Thought it was wheel bearing or differential, turns out to be torque tube. Under extended warranty from GM, for replacement.
mine is a c7 7sp and my torque bearing went out. Chevy dealer recommends clutch assy change due to hot spots on flywheel. Can a bad bearing in the torque tube cause the clutch to wobble and cause hot spots on flywheel?

Yes, but unless you can show blame to one warranty part going bad and directly taking out a non warranty part alone (clutch), it's a hard battle to get GM to pay replace a non warranty part.
Either way, if the drive train is out, and the clutch has problems, then have them replace the entire clutch system now (even if they are going to charge you parts). It will save you about $2K of labor if they have to pull the drive train back out on your dime to replace it sooner, than later instead.
Truth is, I would work the deal with them that since the TT went bad and it caused problems with the clutch, you will eat the clutch parts cost to change all the clutch parts out now if they will not replace them under warrenty, but they have to eat the labor replacing the clutch system isntead.

after 6 months being worked on, i am now getting what sounds like to me gear whine from the bell housing area. am i a candidate for a torque tube rebuild?
