Just replaced my shifter housing bushings and what a difference!
I found this on the actual bottom of the shifter looks like the rubber grommet/boot is ripped. Is this an issue that needs fixed?

eventually, it will leave noise, heat and fumes into the car
worst part is the heat will damage other parts in the console & shifter
Yes, the rubber boot part is the return to natural neutral position of the shifter.
As for just the rubber boot, you can't replace it since there is no way to remove the damper half way up the shifter shaft without damaging it, and GM wants around $250 for the shifter box with shifter top plate and shifter shaft instead.
The better choice across the board, is to just replace the entire shifter box and top plate with shifter rod with a MGW shifter isntead.
What you get with the MGW shifter is not only shorter shifts throws, but a shifter that does not have all the slop that you think that it came out of Ferguson tracker isntead.
thank you Dano523. That's what I thought. I did find a fix with a inner tube and zip ties someone posted. Looks like it works if don't want to replace shifter.
With so many of us that have upgraded our shifters to MGW units, if you post a year of your vet with a WTB shifter plate in the EE, should be able to pick a used still good top plate with shifter shaft up for cheap.
And yes, you need to give the year, since there was change in the shifter top plate design about half way through the C6 production (location of the bolt channel for the ****).
Left mgw unit shows the two different bolt channel locations.
