Get that car away from them before you spend more than a new one would cost "Fixing it" just to find out it's a wire or starter issue.

Pulling the motor out tomorrow. Removing the pan and look at the bearings and crankshaft. Then make a decision on the new motor. If it can be rebuilt, that's what we'll do.

I have a hard time believing that a competent mechanic can't make a solid diagnosis without pulling the engine.

Hox, my first thot was to agree. Pull the valve covers and look at the valve train.
Simple. Pull the, pan. Oops, not so simple anymore.
But, still, seems like pulling the motor and we'll "tell you what the problem is" seems a little over the top. But, then, we aren't talking to the mechanic, either.
I still hope it's something simple...bound starter, maybe.

posted a long time ago, much more diagnosis could have been done............ rotating crank by hand with accessories disconnected..... numerous things.......... especially when rosey mentioned the burning wiring smell............ possible the oil pump may have caused damage, but noise and lights would have come on well before it seized................

Ruxxy, coming out the bottom with the engine is sometimes not as bad as it sounds................ he could have left it intact and removed pan for inspection too by raising it off mounts............. just sayin'.......

Got to pull the cradle to remove the pan. I didn't have time to chase them around today but I'm going up there first thing in the morning. The crank couldn't be turned by hand because it finally seized.
