Default Clutch install gone wrong

06 w/ 150k+ miles. Got a monster lt1-s with slave, speed bleeder, and billet bearing support. Brought to GM specialist recommended by my tuner, several vettes outside when I drop it off.

install takes a few days longer than expected, my daily, but it is what it is. Car is back together and immediately has issues on test drive.

TOB sitting in bottom of bellhousing

Slave carnage

$85 billet support bearing chewed to chit

By clutch fingers

Need new slave, new billet support, and to ship clutch back to Monster for inspection/possible repair.

No word back yet. Monster said install error with TOB falling off during install and then slave shoving bearing support into clutch.

I was freaking out because I installed the billet bearing support myself and thought I screwed it up somehow even though I followed the directions and watched a video several times on how to do it and it went together like it should with no issues.

This all just happened this afternoon so still developing. Just needed to vent...

I don't remember what exactly its called, but did you measure for the spacer, if any, you needed for the TOB assembly base for the clutch you purchased.

Edit ... Found it ...=>

I didnt measure anything, paying a shop $1300+ for install cuz I dont have time, tools, or knowledge to tackle at this point in time. Someday I hope to be able to do all my work myself, but aint there yet.

shop has already ordered new slave and billet bearing support. Clutch was just shipped back to Monster for eval today.

Shop is taking care of it, so hopefully all is well

Clutch arrived today and pressure plate is ruined. They need flywheel and hardware sent back to so they can repair/replace. Estimated $5-600 damage to clutch on top of destroyed slave and billet bearing support.

waiting to hear back from the shop...

That sucks. I don't know much about the LT stuff or what is required to install on an LS but I would guess the spacing is different. Looks like a spacing issue to me. Maybe they sent you the wrong slave setup for your car.

The throw out bearing had to fall off during install. The input shaft goes thru the TOB and into the flywheel. If measurements were off (and Monster says in instructions to measure everything) then it would have rattled, or not engaged/disengaged. But there is no way for TOB to come off input shaft if it was installed unless input shaft breaks (it didnt). So when they depressed clutch, instead of TOB pushing into clutch, the slave itself was pushed into clutch and shredded.

I guess I am confused. So was the TOB laying in the bell housing when they pulled it back apart or was it still on the input shaft like the photo?

Man, that's horrible. Glad the shop is taking care of it...but hopefully it's a different tech doing the install. That's obviously a colossal screw up. In for updates...

No, the TOB was in the bottom of the bellhousing when he threw it in the lift after the test drive. He just put it on input shaft after he tore everything apart to keep things in proximity...

neither. Lethal was a lil rich for my blood. Dont remember if I reached JMS or not. R2 was my 2nd choice (recommended by somebody on Alamo Area Corvettes on FB)behind the shop that did it. Was actually the one my tuner recommended. I dont wanna put the shop on blast as stuff happens and he said he is gonna make it right.

Also considered Take Flight Performance (they did my cam install) but the other shop was able to get me in sooner.

If their going to make it right at no cost to you thats all that matters.Things happen.Lots of shops out there that would try to weasel out of it for one reason or another

Yeah they totally screwed this up, clearly it’s their fault. You don’t need or have to measure anything on these clutches, they aren’t McLeod’s. Just bolt them on and go. They check the overall height etc when putting the clutch together at Monster. These LT based clutches are really nice units

Got clutch back from Monster today. It arrived there yesterday afternoon and they had it fixed and back on my doorstep less than 24 hours later (I am in San Antonio and they are up by Ft Worth 4.5-5hr drive). $624 to fix (includes $21 to replace dowels that were damaged in return shipping and $50 return shipping). Cost me $119 to ship it back to Monster. Shop order slave (est $200) and billet bearing support ($85)... so this was approx $1050 error an extra week or more (i dropped the car off 2 weeks ago today and it took several days to start working on it due to issues with the car ahead of mine). Tomorrow will be 1 weeks since doomed test drive.

Hopefully next update will be the car in my driveway, lovin the new clutch

I can't help but notice how much that monster looks like an OEM LS7 pressure plate.

Wow that sucks. Seems like it is totally on them but I guess they didn't order the parts so I can kind of see their viewpoint.
