Default Two battery questions please.

I got a new battery today at Advance Auto Parts. Platinum H5.

The store manager put it in for me. He hooked up some sort of a device to the OBD-II port. He said that if he didn't do that it could set off a theft deterrent and I would have to have it towed. Fortunately that didn't happen. Especially since the light indicated "Don't proceed".

So that is the first question. What was he talking about? And since the terminal connectors are not so good I need to replace them. It would be helpful to understand what, if anything I need to do.

Second question. When he went to unscrew the battery hold down it was loose. What is the screw supposed to tighten in to? If there is supposed to be a captive nut there it was missing.

Thanks!!!

It's possible that he used that device to keep the settings of the radio, etc active while the battery was disconnected.
Did you gave to re index the windows after the new battery was installed?

I've replaced 3 batteries in my C6, and I've yet to see theft deterrent alarm, or whatever he was trying to avoid.

Maybe someone with more experience can chime in.

That is good news. LOL

Nope, the windows work ok.

Thank you!

The terminals are not very secure. The negative one is original and has some funky clamp thing going on. I didn't look at it long but it didn't make sense that the tightening nut was on the top of the clamp.

Not mine but this is the style.

Yea, that's a C6 negative cable alright. The positive (red) terminal is similar, but has a red cap that snaps down over the terminal. Here is a picture. The nut you see in your photo is convex on the bottom. As you tighten that nut on the battery stud, that nut, riding in a concave portion of the clamp, effectively draws the other "half" of that split clamp toward the battery post, thus clamping tightly around it. Your best bet is to search the internet for a replacement set of cables. Easy to find and install. They are not that expensive either for what they do. As for the parts store guy plugging something into your port, I don't know what he was doing. I too have replaced a few C6 batteries and have never set off an alarm such as this guy was trying to prevent, I guess. Also, I have never had to re-index my windows after battery replacement. For some reason, some C6's windows will not work right after battery work and the windows have to be re-indexed. You can read about this in your owner's manual. About the only thing I have had to do after battery replacement is to reset the AM/FM radio stations, but there is a work-around for this too.

as far as the obdii port, no idea what he was talking about. my car ate batteries on the regular before i found out the starter wire was loose. in the 4 or 5 i put in, never had an issue with the anti theft system. As far as replacing terminals, shouldnt be too hard to cut/crimp/shrink wrap new ones on. the mechanism is weird on the stock ones and makes for difficulty running external wiring ( nitrous controller for example) but you could always use a different style.

A decent solution to a marginal battery terminal.

Thanks for all the great info!!!

I really appreciate how helpful people are on this forum!

The box he plugged in to the OBD-II port was quite large, 6" X 8" X 6" tall at least and had indicator lights for connected, proceed, do not proceed and something else.

I have a + and - pair of these I would like to use if I can figure out how to get the Negative connected. I have a few extra things, direct hot wire to radiator fans, Alky Control system and more on the way to try to get connected.
