Can someone please help me?! I have a 2005 Vette I purchased about 6 months ago because my son wanted my Camaro. ANYHOW, two nights ago I tried to put it IN park and it would not budge. I could move the gear shift, but it would not change gears! Got on here and was able to find a cure. Well, today I pulled it out of my garage and when I went to pull it back in the gear shift isn't working, and I have been trying to find the answer for 5 hours!
I can crank the car
I can move the gear shift through all the gears, just will not engage the transmission (God, I hope I am saying this all right - I am a high school Math teacher, not a mechanic)
I can change the gears without cranking the car and/or pressing the brake (which is not how it was before.
So I took off the console cover and was looking in there to see something just came unhooked - Well I think something is broken. It appears that when I move the shifter, it is not connecting to anything to engage the actual gears. I have searched all over for a diagram of the shift assembly (see, I am learning these terms from my search), and I can not find one inside the assembly. I did come across this picture on the forum and compared it to mine. I circled in yellow what I THINK the problem is and circled in red what I think is broken.
Don't laugh, but I had to watch a YouTube video to change the blinker in a car! But I am not stupid; I can follow directions! I DO NOT want to have it towed to the dealership because our dealership is shady and not very trustworthy! At the end of May, before going out of town, I had them check the air in my tires because the stupid "tire monitor" warning won't go off. They said they would reset something.... Ok, you are the professionals, I trust what you say! WELL, my AC stopped blowing from the vents, and only the defrost - crazy when I was having checked was air in tires. I live in Mississippi, where it is hot as Satan rubbed his butt across the entire state - that was just unacceptable. After getting on HERE, I disconnected the battery for about 30 minutes, reconnected, and BAM all is well. They didn't bother to warn me this could happen or anything - just, "that will be about $400 a tire to fix, have a great day!" Ummm, no, I just ignore the tire monitor message for free. Anyhow, I hope someone can help me with this problem! I This is a picture I found on the forum, where the tail of the white arrow is -that is what I think is messed up! But I am not sure! This is mine, it looks broken This is mine, just further back from the piece I think is broken would appreciate any expertise!
No need to apologize for asking questions, that's what this forum is for. Being stuck in park is one issue but selecting a gear and no engagement is another. On an automatic, the shifer is attached to a cable that goes to the transmission and if gears are not engaging while selecting one, the cable is either broken or has become disconnected from either the bottom of the shifter mechanism or on the transmission. The shifter has a steel ball that a plastic socket at the end of the cable snaps into and same on the transmission. Over time (or if someone has connected and disconnected this connection without care) this plastic can wear and the cable pops out. The easiest place to start looking would be on the transmission. Someone needs to get eyes on the transmission end of the cable to see if it's attached. If it is then the console needs to be removed to check the other end. Be careful! Your car shouldn't crank or start while in gear, only neutral and park. If something else is wrong like a broken PRNDL switch this can be a safety issue.
IF your shifter is getting stuck in park it is likely the micro switches in the shifter assembly that are worn out. Some people have replaced these with some luck but I've found that the micro switches used in these shifters are very hard to find. There have been other forum members that post the part numbers for these but I've ordered them and found them to not have the correct levers on them and require some Mcgivering to make them work. The best solution in my opinion is to replace the shifter assembly. The part number needed for a 2005 is 15277559 and by far the best price I've found is Summit racing for about $220.00. I've ordered three of these in the past for customers and they come in a GM box. Other companies want much more money for these.
