Whose done both and which, in your opinion, is easier and less work? I just finished pulling the trans/torque tube to access the back of my engine to fix a leak. It's still leaking and I'm considering pulling the engine this time instead of coming at it from the back-side.
Seams to me pulling the engine can't be any more work but I may be wrong. Educate me!

Variety is the spice of life.
If you have a lift, my preference is to R&R the whole powertrain from the bottom. That's how they put them together in Bowling Green.
I've done both as well, I'd drop the drivetrain. I took my engine out of the top recently, and even with the heads off it was hard to get it out (alone anyway). A lot less wiring to mess with also.
I haven't spotted any leaks on my rebuild yet, getting everything lined up and sealed properly does take some effort. I also put the rear main in backward the first time, the writing was so small I didn't see it. $20 wasted.

Definitely easier from the back. It takes me 8 hours to pull the motor out from the top but I can have everything out behind the motor in about 4.

I would lean slightly toward pulling the motor. Either way, I can do it in an evening after work.
The main reason is that I would rather have the motor on the stand. If the oil pan needs to come off, it can happen. Access and visibility will be generally better.
The big thing that makes pulling the motor faster is to lower the engine/cradle on a jack while you're working around the bellhousing. That little bit of extra clearance makes all the difference.
