My rack and pinion is leaking it needs to be replaced, but I had a question. I have seen the company that fixes them and sends them back to you, and that seems like the best bet in terms of money as well as quality of the part. However, I have never removed a rack and pinion before and I was wondering how difficult of a job that is? I am going to have the car in pieces here before too long because I plan on replacing the cam, and I was wondering if it is reasonably achievable for me to take this off and put it back on having never done it before.

If you can change a cam you can pull a steering rack. Many people pull the rack to remove the crank pulley, which you'll need to do as part of the cam job.
Remember to center the steering wheel first and secure it roughly in that position with some twine or tape or something. Otherwise if you spin it with the rack disconnected youl'l bust the clockspring.

awesome, thank you. I thought I saw people were disconnecting the hardlines, but I wasn't sure if they were removing it entirely. I also wasn't sure if I would need specialty tooks to change it out. So thank you.

The rack itself is right in front of the pulley. To get the pulley off you have to either remove the rack or lower the cradle to which the rack is attached.
