Default Engine clicking noise

I am hearing a clicking noise on the engine similar to what a diesel engine makes. Is this normal? Should I be concerned? I have not driven my C7 for a few days and then when I started it today, I started hearing it. I wonder if that sound gradually came to be and I just did not notice it because I was driving the car a lot.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have not noticed any clicking sound as you describe from mine.

Update: Today, I noticed a clicking/ticking sound when I started the car and was backing out of the driveway. It was loud enough that I got out and looked under the hood. Nothing seemed amiss, so I went about my business. I'll pay more attention and see if there's any pattern. Mileage is right at 2350.

I heard it in a car that started up indoors where it was very quiet in a sustained idle. It seemed like the fuel injuectors clicking on an off at idle.

To me, it seemed completely normal if not a bit odd. I think it's because of the direct injection system it seems different.

Take it to your local Dealer have them inspect it. If anything it will put your mind at ease. Most likely its a normal sound from the injectors. It also could be a bad injector causing a slight mis fire (spark knock) in the host cylinder. Get it looked at.

More than likely, what you're hearing is the Direct Injection. This system requires the injectors to operate at close to peak cylinder compression. So we're talking about a fuel pump sending fuel to the injectors at around 2000psi.

Additionally, the car manufacturers are using several types of sound deadening to muffle the, "tick... tick... tick..." You may want take a look under the hood & see if there a loose or missing foam, this can make a big difference in sound especially at idle.

If you search "direct injection clicking", you will find that as Steve said, it is normal in a direct injection motor. It occurs in all GM products with direct injection.

Thank you so much for the responses, everyone. I feel much better now. I will call the dealer tomorrow to set up an appointment and put my mind at ease. I will drive it today to church and for Christmas shopping with the wife.

You really hear it between 1500 and 2500 rpm`s...After doing my tests ,I believe its a noisy DI fuel pump.

I noticed it at idle. It doesn't seem as pronounced at higher RPMs, but, probably because the "normal" engine noise is higher too.

I did a search and heard exactly the same type of noise from a couple of videos of DI engines on idle. I guess I can get used to the sound of my "diesel Stingray"

I will have way more fun driving it later today knowing the noise is normal and to be expected after all.

Have it checked... at about 2,000 miles I noticed what I thought was just a normal grumbly V8 at idle.. a little bit of clatter that would go away as soon as the revs went up. I just assumed I had not noticed it before.

I went in for my first oil change at about 5,500 miles and commented about it. My dealer was great, they went under the car and found the noise was coming from the torque tube. They called GM, short story is GM wanted the torque tube back... I get my car back with a new torque tube on Wednesday.

Dealer said that GM engineering said they had one other C7 with the problem and wanted the torque tube shipped back to them intact.

My guess is that is not your problem, but worth while having it checked.

Did you keep the revs below 4000 rpm's during the first 500 miles ?

OP I've heard it on mine a few times. Did some research and it is a DI related issue. Not unique to weather but does seem like it is a cold weather issue. I've not heard it since about 600 miles but may have just not been looking for it.

It was really cold here yesterday, about 35F. Today, the clicking sound was not as pronounced. I guess, with the warmer temperature, the sound deadeners worked more effectively.

SlammedC7: I will get a video in the morning. I am currently looking at the autoline.com video featuring Tadge Juechter, the Corvette chief engineer, and I have my grandkids over.

This is completely normal. Direct Injection makes the car sound like a sewing machine at idle and at low RPMs.

I put long tube headers on it and the sound is intensified somewhat. If you don't like the sound, avoid headers because its more apparent but I don't mind at all.

Guys on the c6 Z06 forum complain of this noise on their LS7's. Those cars are notorious for dropping valves and windowing blocks. - maybe these LT motors on the c7 will start dropping valves too.

Luckily my ls7 z06 makes no ticking or clicking noises. and I have an extended warranty to 2018.

Unwarranted fear mongering. This is completely normal for DI engines - I've owned 3 of them (Cadillacs).
