The intrusion sensor does not work with top off, that's a given. Why GM chose to do that is unknown, probably so a leaf falling in won't set it off. If you want to arm it, use the 25 cent wall moly above.
Somebody messes with your wheels or any thing else but movement in the car, with the top off, and the system will work fine.
The original question here was strictly about the cabin movement sensor.
I'm going to have to test this again, I'm wondering if something might have changed mid model year?
The bag that I placed in my car was a plastic grocery store bag with a pair of shorts in it. I reached in with the top off and placed the bag on the passenger side seat. I never toughed the car so it was not a motion sensor that set it off. I assumed it was the intrusion detection.
Hmm, car is in garage and roof is in the hatch. Think I'll go try that, hope it works . Good tip, thanks

There is a switch button inside one of the guide holes for the Removable Top in the Windshield Header. When you remove the Top, the button disengages and the Intrusion Alarm is off. I guess they didn't want the Alarm to go off when an errant Leaf falls off a Tree and lands inside the Car.
You can override it by placing one of those Plastic Wall Anchors inside the hole to engage the switch button. Someone here came up with that idea, so the interior of the Car will be secure with the Top off as well.
Ok, I did try mine again and I realized that when I set it off I did have the roof on but the windows down. So as others have said, the only way the motion sensor works is either with the roof on or with the peg in the hole.
Now, a little disturbing fact...I had the peg in the hole and I wanted to try it out so I reached in the car and took my Oakleys right off the center console and it never went off. I reached in a moved the sun visor and it went off.

It does work with the top off. I've set mine off a couple times.
Locked/armed with the key fob.
First time, I reached over the window towards the console to put something in the cupholder.
Second time I reached in to the seat to get something I dropped.
I'd venture you have the switch (next to the hatch release button) off.
Only works with the Top ON, otherwise there wouldn't be an override switch hidden in the A Pillar Top Mount Hole. See Glen's suggestion.
I always keep the Intrusion Alarm ON, although you can hit it with your Knee and disable it without realizing it. Bad place for the switch..
Check up Thread. Others have tested it out. Top off is doesn't work, so you must be mistaken or you rocked the Car and set off the Motion Detector Alarm, (not the Intrusion Detector Alarm) instead.
Motion sensor is for inside the car. If you have the top off, it's suppose to warn you if someone were to try and take something out of your car or try to open the door from the inside. Any movement in or around the car should set it off is my understanding of how it works...
no mine is set to the on position mine does not work because I have locked the car put my keys about 500 feet away came back to the car and tried to pull my screen down it worked and that alone should have set off the alarm or whatever the motion sensor is supposed to protect
So it seems my motion sensors dont work. Weather i lock it with the fob or autolock when I walk away, I had my girlfriend test things and no motion was detected, also she was able to reach in and open the center console and also press the button to make the screen go down in the dash. She could not unlock the doors or open the glove box though. I do have a 2LT and have this feature and also have confirmed the button is not in disabled mode. Any thoughts for me? This is unfortunate as I was hoping to keep my small carry firearm behind the screen but if anyone can walk up and press the button without me or the key present and it just opens for them then that just plain sucks!!

This happened to me also. Seems like this feature is "hit-or-miss".
Kinda like the memory seats.
Takes 30 seconds after locking vehicle before it arms itself. If you stand there with remote in your pocket, ummm, gonna take longer. If you walk up on it with remote on person, it deactivates. Owners manual Page 2-16 thru 18
