Buy what you want and want what you buy. I don't think it was right for your wife to pass comment about who buys a Corvette unless she is a fit young woman.
My gf is a fit young woman. And said the same thing about fat old guys buying vettes when I mentioned I liked them.
After taking her to a car show with a bunch of C7's she loves it.
I would change the statement from "only" fat old men to "mostly" older men and you will probably have an accurate statement. Every time me and my wife see a corvette on the road we joke that an older guy is probably driving it and in most instances that is the case.
Yeah, I'm the old guy with the Vette. In my younger days I always wanted one but finances were never in order to have one. Family and my sons medical expenses always came first. Seems like every time we saw daylight with the checkbook, Murphy's Law kicked in. Fast forward half a lifetime and all my ducks fell in a row and Karma kicked in. It's uncanny how many "ifs" became "dids" and my new 2014, exactly how I would have ordered it, proverbably fell in my lap. Next time you see the old guy in the Vette, don't think badly of him,. It might be me.
I had similar comments when I was first looking. A woman in the family ( very fit and attractive) said but you’ve always had BMWs, Porsches or exotic type cars, why Corvette? I explained how different the new one was but she just kept shaking her head No. I didn’t realize how many others got the same response.
What will it take for the corvette to lose that old reputation? Sure we can say who cares but its reality and bugs me. Even people who like them always have a but at the end. Car reviews always stick in some type of shot. It would be nice if the rep was gone.
I'm 70 and not fat. I train hard at the gym six days a week. No one has commented to me anything about old guys driving Vettes in the 16 months and 22k miles since I got my C7 vert. My wife fully supports my driving a Vette. She even calls it "our Corvette," even though she's driven it a total of two blocks.
ONLY old fat guys? Tell your wife I'm not old, I'm not fat, and I'm not a guy
At the end of the day, if you are buying anything with your own hard earned money, who is someone else to say crap about it?
I'll second that. A male friend at work does rib me about driving an old man's car, but it's all in fun. I just throw it back and tell him I'm driving his dream
My wife was the same. She had maybe 10 reasons that I should not buy a new Corvette. I had 3.
1. I want it and haven't had a new sports car since 1980.
2. I made enough money this year to pay for it.
3. The B@#ch that lives with your son won't take the money we leave him when we die and buy a new car.
She said "Buy it, what color?". We both decided and agreed. Now that we have it, she loves it. The other day two young guys at a stop light yelled "That's a good looking car lady. You look good in that car".
Made it worth every penny!
Life is too short to drive ****** cars. If you can afford it buy it.
As a 24 year old who's in great shape, I can tell you your wife's perception is off haha. I love my C7 and can tell you that if this car was somehow 25k it would flood the market to a greater extent than Camaros, Challengers, and Mustangs currently do with the young demographic.
It's an "old man" car simply because most aren't fortunate enough to afford it until they are getting towards retirement age.
What is it with some women these days ? My wife is very supportive of my Corvette habit. I think you guys with the condescending wives should tell them not to wear jeans because "only girls with nice trim butts should wear jeans". See how they like it.
My wife was very supportive, also. She loves the C7. And, my wife can wear any jeans most attractive 20 year olds can, and look just as good. If you are having trouble convincing your wife that buying a C7 is a good idea, take one for a test drive and pick up some good looking thirty something when you drive by your house. I think she will get the message. Of course, you may also be looking for a new house to go with your new C7.
When I decided to buy the 2015 my wife hated the idea. She said only fat old men drove vettes, to which I answered you just described me. But as I pondered what she said I remembered as a teenager whenever I saw a guy in a nice muscle car that was 40 or over, I said what a waste. So I decided to explore my options, I did demo rides in Porsche, Mazzarati, Jaguar, Shelby Mustangs, Aston Martin and Audi. I was pretending I could afford any of these and just wanted to find a possible better choice to both please the Mrs and satisfy my interest.
Well after the month it took to do this, I ordered the Vette. Nothing really came close when I factored in the cost. Without considering cost the Corvette was still the clear winner to me. Corvette proves if it seems too good to be true, it might just be.
My latest Corvette story purely for entertainment purposes.
I guess I fit the old category, but definitely not the fat category, with a BMI of approximately 21. I weigh a few pounds less than I did when I graduated from college. It's not distributed quite the same way, but for almost 40 years older I'm not going to complain.
I've had the occasional crack about the 'Vette being an old man's car' and that "I'm too young for a mid life crisis car" and some folks even went on with "you've had BMWs and Audis in the past, why corvette?"
I fire up the V8 standing next to it and go "here's why"
It's an "old man" car simply because most aren't fortunate enough to afford it until they are getting towards retirement age.
Especially with the economy tanking twice since the turn of the century. The younger generations love this car from what I've experienced. They just can't afford a $70k car right now.
I owned my first Vette when I was 21. Always had a Vette in the garage unless I was transferred overseas..... I guess your wife would classify me as one of those old men....60+, but I'm far from being fat and out of shape.
If my wife said this (which she never would..she loves vettes), I'd tell her the same thing---Her generalization is BS...
