Thanks, at least it'll give me something to show them at my dealer!
i emailed all this to my dealer and this is the reply i got.
Mike, We have no idea what the A8 is about, regarding the updates, GM has not sent the dealers anything on them yet. There is a lot of info out there on the internet regarding the Stingrays. Until the Dealers are informed through GM, you have nothing to worry about. Have a great day!
Thanks,
Suburban Chevrolet
basically saying that none of this is real. first they refused to give me the military discount and now this.

BOBSZ06 posted the most definitive reply for the A8 in the link:
Went to the dealer to get up-dates and was told would not recommend doing unless having issues due to the relearning, so I well hold out for now due to no issues.
If it isn't broke, don't give the dealer a chance to screw it up.
please tell me where your dealer is because we are going to do a road trip and we will come there.
That's one hell of a road trip..... Maybe too far for you.
Show your dealership my repair order below and have them contact my dealer if they have an issue trying to find the PDR and A8 updates. Most of the info is in this thread and they shouldn't give you too much of a hassle.
Hamilton Chevy-- small dealership but the service was top notch!
Jim Beckman was my service writer and very helpful. The Service manager (Joe) went out of his way and even got a discontinued body screw from the GM Tech Center since mine was mismatched.
Since I needed the GPS firmware updated due to constant rebooting, I requested the dealer do the PDR update at the same time. Here is their message: "Called GM and was told updates of this sort cannot be applied unless there is a problem present and the update is related to the concern."
So, if you expected the improved imaging provided with the update, buy a new car.

Just had mine done. My Tech said you need make a complaint about bad image quality. If you complain, they will do it.
Generally speaking, it is best to go to the service department with a complaint about the issue addressed by the update. For example, for the PDR update, complain about lack of color and contrast in the video. Updates are intended to address problems customers may be having. Many service departments won't do an update unless you complain about symptoms addressed by the update.
My service dealer, who is a top-10 Corvette seller, wants me to do all four updates with my next free oil change and leave the car with them all day. They're 35 miles out of town and they promised a loaner, but does it take that long to perform the four updates? They did PI1375B (Infotainment) and an oil change last May in about an hour. He said if the A8 issues get worse he'd do that one ahead of time.
I need the A8 update (PI1473) to address the sluggish first 1-2 shift and other odd behavior mentioned earlier, none of which is causing me major mental trauma at this time. I'm ambivalent about the PDR update (PI1493) since I don't use it and don't have any problems with Infotainment (PI1375C) or HVAC (PIT5383A), AFAIK. What issues do these last two address?

I was just at my dealer last week. I made an appointment for an oil change and said I wanted the A8 update as I was experiencing some hard shifting - especially the downshift from third to first when rolling to a stop.
When I got there the tech informed me that they had not scheduled any time for updates and that they take "a day or two" so there was no way they could do the A8 and PDR update (which I also said I wanted as the quality is lacking). He further explained that "some of these updates take 45 steps" and take a long time to complete.
In any case, I made another appointment two weeks from now to hopefully get both done. I'll need to leave it for a day or two. I hope it's worth it!

Is your car a 2016? If so, I would think it already has the newest A8 update. The tech may be thinking about the old procedure for the A8 which was indeed tedious and time-consuming, requiring quite a bit of road time--but the new update is a two-step procedure, one for the update and a second for the "fast learn." The latter is performed with the scan tool and the tranny temp must be between 167-185°F for the procedure to even start. The problem is that mine has never exceeded 150°, even in the worst summer gridlock traffic. I have no idea how they would get it up to that spec.
The PDR update should take an hour or two at most, according to the dealer I spoke to who services lots of Corvettes. I haven't decided if I'll even bother with that one, as I haven't even used the PDR in six months and have no plans of doing it regularly.
The hard downshifting may go away on its own by adaptive learning. My car is now seven months old (2000 miles) and did the 3-1 hard shift twice early on but hasn't done it in probably six months. The other small glitches seem to have disappeared, so I likely won't do the A8 update at all. It still shifts a bit soft/slow from 1-2 for the first cold shift, but I don't consider that a problem or even an irritation, and the flaring noted early on under the same conditions seems to have mostly disappeared. The hard shift from N to D after backing out of my garage when cold is also gone now, too. Thus, it seems to be fixing itself.

Although I occasionally forget, I try and use the PDR every time I drive the car. It'll come in handy if somebody runs a red light and hits you or runs you off the road with no actual contact. You paid $1000 for that PDR, might as well get some benefit from it. Kind of like insurance, you may never need it, but if you do....
