Is your car a 2016? If so, I would think it already has the newest A8 update. The tech may be thinking about the old procedure for the A8 which was indeed tedious and time-consuming, requiring quite a bit of road time--but the new update is a two-step procedure, one for the update and a second for the "fast learn." The latter is performed with the scan tool and the tranny temp must be between 167-185°F for the procedure to even start. The problem is that mine has never exceeded 150°, even in the worst summer gridlock traffic. I have no idea how they would get it up to that spec.
The PDR update should take an hour or two at most, according to the dealer I spoke to who services lots of Corvettes. I haven't decided if I'll even bother with that one, as I haven't even used the PDR in six months and have no plans of doing it regularly.
The hard downshifting may go away on its own by adaptive learning. My car is now seven months old (2000 miles) and did the 3-1 hard shift twice early on but hasn't done it in probably six months. The other small glitches seem to have disappeared, so I likely won't do the A8 update at all. It still shifts a bit soft/slow from 1-2 for the first cold shift, but I don't consider that a problem or even an irritation, and the flaring noted early on under the same conditions seems to have mostly disappeared. The hard shift from N to D after backing out of my garage when cold is also gone now, too. Thus, it seems to be fixing itself.
Thanks for the input, I thought the update should not take that long. It's a 2015, about 7500 miles and still having the shifting issue. So I'll see next week if the update helps, I hope I really don't have to leave it for two days.

This isn't a GM only thing. Dealers fundamentally do not understand how software works on these cars. There are always production updates to software. Sometimes these updates are to fix customer complaints or due to bugs. In these cases a TSB will be created, but if the software is just "general improvements" or it updates or improves dealer diagnostics then there is no TSB.
Depending on the changes even future model year software can be backward compatible.
However your dealer will not want to take responsibility for upgrading you to new software without a TSB and a known issue.
Its sad to say, but most Chevy Dealers are not aware of any of these updates. I went in yesterday for my 2nd oil change and to get the PDR re flashed and they had no clue what I was talking about. The Service Manager asked for the copy of the bulletin that has been posted here and said that he could not find anything in the computer for it. About 20 minutes later he came in the waiting room and told me that they were able to find it and would be able to do the re flash. He did apologize for the inconvenience and made a joke about Corvette owners always getting info on their cars before the Service Departments do. I would also add that the re flash of the PDR is quite a noticeable difference. I wish I had before and after pics, but don't. Also... I was told that any videos that are on your SD card should be saved before you do this because anything on the card will be lost!!! All of you track guys might want to save those videos before having this done.

Reason: more info
i finally got the dealer i bought the car from to find the PDR update and do it. this was the 3rd time i went out there to have it done. it took him 3 hours. not sure why. but it is done. the update sheet says to use the SD slot for the PDR to load the update. not sure why that would earse the files from the SD card since that would be out of the slot.
however, i took the car in a few days before to a more local dealer about the oil low warning and he came up with 3 software upgrades that need to be done. but he did this based on the PI numbers listed in the forum which i gave him.
as for the oil issue. it was 2 quarts low. i have 4500 miles on the car and did take a road trip though areas that were over 100deg. but even the dealer is confused. no burning and no leaks. so i will go back to him later this month and have it checked, get an oil change and get the other two software updates done.
I got some of these software updates installed, and still have to return for the PDR one. I think on the Infotainment update, GM denied warranty and charged the dealer back. Next time, I'll need to provide reason for the requested updates I guess instead of just asking for the latest software.

My dealer will not update any software unless you can articulate a specific problem. No updates just because.
have your dealer show you the recall document and then tell them you are having an issue that matches one of them. i am asking for the HVAC to be updated because i swear the heater is not going on with the top down.
Example--someone were to do something stupid in my car while on Valet mode(crash it, burnout,---misc), I would have a case against them with video. If I would record the audio portion, it would cause me problems and get thrown out. I would get sued for illegal wire tap instead of him paying for damages to car.
"Currently, about a dozen states require two-party (or all-party) consent for audio recording. The other states require only one-party consent, which effectively makes the Valet Mode PDR system legal to use as currently implemented. The states requiring two-party or all-party consent are: California, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Washington (state); in Illinois, Michigan, and Nevada the matter can be complicated, depending on the context or circumstances."
I'm pretty sure it'd only be a problem if you attempt to use the audio. The audio can easily be stripped from the video.
The issue that I was having with the 1-2 shift was that when I would first start the car, the 1-2 shift would hesitate, then shift hard. Didn't mind the hard shift but the hesitation kind of sucked. Nothing major, but seems to be fixed now.
I do not know what the TSB numbers are but can post the software program numbers or the OP-Code from my service ticket if that would help anyone.
Here are the things that I noticed were "lost" in the upgrades:
Had a favorite set for home on the navigation system - seems to have been lost
Phone no longer paired with the system
Nothing that was important to me - but they seem to have been lost in the process.
Pls post the TSB and other numbers from your service ticket. My Service Rep is not aware of these upgrades.
Tks.
When I went to have the software update applied the screens for different drive modes are all the same now. I no longer have some of the cool screens that came with the car. I have a 2LT 2015 and I am not happy. Has anyone had the same issue?

When you say different screens, are you talking about the tachometers? If so, you have to "link" them to drive modes. I believe its under settings.
Isn't that one of the warning signs for the dreaded TC failure ??

Mine is a 2015 as well. Here is the software version: 23350846AT0.1 Cal Version 23119739AA
Generally, if your video has a green cast and poor colors, it needs to be upgraded. When they updated mine the first time, it did not take and I had to take the car back in to have them do it again. Other forum members have had the same experience.
Check the software version before/after. If the version changes, you're good. If it doesn't change....
There are some people here on the forum that can PM you the update to do yourself. While the dealer for some reason needs hours to do it, you can do it yourself in ten minutes.

Thanks. I'll check my version # tonight. But I believe it wasn't done.
The video still looks the same with the green cast and poor colors. I was at the dealership 6 hours yesterday for a couple of warranty items and none got completed. Such a wastes of time.
PM me --> If you have the latest PDR software Update
