From the OP's description, my GUESS would be that the car had a main bearing failure. Nothing but an educated guess based on very limited info.
Timing chain cover gasket failed on my 96 GTS Viper at the one year mark, dumping all the coolant into the oil pan. Repair took 3 1/2 MONTHS and Dodge did not give me a rental/loaner car. Engine was pulled and shipped to Arrow in Detroit who did all of the Viper warranty rebuilds. I still own the car today, and have not had another single engine problem or any issues with the front of the car being apart.
On the other hand, I had a Saturn Sky redline for a daily driver, and Reliable Chevrolet in Grapevine Texas tore the entire car up so badly trying to work on it (after they dropped something in the engine while changing spark plugs) that I had to sell the car. It was 5 months of unbelievable screw up after another. From parts carts rolling into the side of the car leaving a 3 foot long gash in it, to forgetting to put the clamps on the coolant hoses and me driving it home (total coolant loss!), to cracking panels, to damaging the hood and door....
Not surprised you didn't get a "post-mortem," I had a tranny go bad in a new 911 a couple of years ago, replaced under warranty. Bad one was shipped back to Germany, service manager told me Porsche would not even tell them what they found, much less me.
Can you reveal what the number of labor hours was for this work? Seems some dealers in the USA are not anxious to do warranty work as some have said the reimbursement rate from GM is not as much as regular non-warranty work. I'm curious if there is any difference in Canada. Hope all goes well for you with your new motor.

The OP's attitude was great from the start.
It's the more flies with honey theory. When I was a much younger man I had a problem with a Ford truck. Even though the Ford factory Rep was quite the smart**s and insulting, I should have restrained myself from grabbing him by the shirt and tie and dragging him over the the counter but I was young and cocky. From that point forward the repairs were on me.
I have learned a lot in 40 years. Be polite, try to go with the flow, make very attempt to work with the service manager and be nice an patient. They are just trying to do their job. Yes, we all want our cars fixed properly and as expeditiously as possible but if you have a good dealership they usually are trying to do their best for you.

Interesting point. I know someone that owns a small dealership and this is one of his complaints. I don't know why, but he is not given the billable hours needed to do a proper warranty covered job.
The service manager (for my car) said that something like 27 hours were used to do this job. This was to do it properly, not trying to minimize the hours. I can't remember the number of hours that he was allocated, something like 20ish comes to mind. When he had my old engine packed up and ready to ship back, he said he was holding it until he got more hours for the repair. Don't know beyond that point what happened. The paperwork doesn't have prices or hours for the repair.

I know this is very hard to do sometimes. But having done that, when I went back for the oil change the service manager came out and we chatted about cars for 15 minutes or so, then talked with the salesman for a while, then sat down with a cup of coffee to wait. I felt like I was very important to them.
I hope, wish and pray that my upcoming new 2022 C8 will be as good and as reliable as my 2016 C7 Z51 which I had for 5 1/2 years without a single issue.
I sold my C7 a short time ago and now anxiously waiting for my new C8 which I am guessing maybe delivered around mid November, my TPW is 10/25.
Only time will tell.
Very good idea. I did plan on doing this but once they got going on my car things moved too fast.
They did tell me they were short-handed and it would take a little longer than usual. I dropped in last Wednesday on the way home from work. It looked pretty much as the picture I posted. I was told there was some work done on it, but it didn't look like it to me. I told them that I had been very patient and understanding, and still was, but that would end soon if progress wasn't made. The service manager said the guy he wants to put on it was free now and he would put him on my car/engine.
Friday morning I get a call that the car is ready! It has been test driven, re-inspected, and the service manager is washing it. I picked it up Friday afternoon and it was perfect. Not a mark or scratch anywhere, hood alignment was spot-on. It was parked out in front when I got there. The manager said he hoped that was OK with me; he liked to have it there as is draws so much attention.
So of course the car runs perfectly now (60 kms and it hasn't seized, so I'm hopeful!). The whole thing was handled so well at the dealership.
Oh, when I went to pick it up the old engine was already boxed up for shipping. I would have liked to look in the intake ports, but didn't think it was fair to have them unpack it. He said he will get a report on what GM finds. That will be interesting to see how much detail it goes into.
It took 2 weeks to the day. I don't think that is too bad for a such a major repair.
