Standard equipment on some model Mercedes and many motorcycles.
Refer to post #32. Motorcycles have different inspection requirements in Virginia. OEM does not supercede VSI requirements. Example - taillight covers - legal in MD, but must be removed in VA.
They work because our brains are wired to detect motion and the flashing translates into perceived motion. I will usually hit my brakes a few times as posted earlier to give others behind me, a heads up. I have seen some that flash only when it's a heavy application of the brakes in which case, i think that's a good thing. If it's always going on, your fatiguing the guy behind you, if it only comes on when it's really needed, then it's a good thing. The key is to brake early and provide others behind you some waring... not everyone has the excellent brakes that the corvette has so just because we can stop sooner, doesn't mean that the guy behind you can stop.
And, i have noticed so many drivers with all their brake lights burned out, i just can't believe that they don't get rear ended. It should be standard practice to check all lights anytime a car goes in for service... usually a $2 fix. ( although in some cars you have to pull a bumper to change a damn headlight )
The manual specifically states ..."must be steady burning." That is not open to interpretation. Work as designed means just that - no broken ground wire that causes bulbs to alternately flash, bulbs that get dim when brake is applied etc. Just like front tag laws, you havent been hassled yet.

I think 6 years would be plenty of time for cops to hassle me if they cared. If you don't want to run one, that's fine with me. I know they help prevent rear-end accidents. There's a reason every police motorcycle in NoVA has one installed.

I've read all the discussion & am somewhat convinced and found this company that claims to have a simple installation & effective product. Might order for my daughter or old lady.
