The easiest way to open the fob is to use the rounded end of the metal key. Push that into the place that the key resides and it will start to separate.

eta:The warmer the fob is, the less likely it is to crack.

Leave the spare fob in a drawer for a long time and the battery will go dead. I know from recent experience.

True, but considering that the oldest C7 isn't that old I doubt an unused fob would already be dead this quickly. I rarely ever use the spare for my C6 but when I do the battery is still alive.

Mine did. It dates back to 2/14.

It's completely in the realm of possibility that C7 fobs are dying by now.

The factory installed battery on my '05 #2 fob (rarely used) lasted a whopping one year. When I opened it up to change it, it had a big fingerprint etched on it. I assume that this is why it died so quickly.

I changed my FOB battery in my September 2013 built 2014 about 1 1/2 years ago. Got the battery from local battery store. I was having trouble with my door opening and one day about a month ago had to get my spare FOB that is seldom used, and door opened fine.

Checked both batteries with a meter I have used for years that puts a load on the battery depending on size. They both read just into the green good area. Changed with some new quality batteries I purchased. Both read well into the green, good area.

Looks like mine needs a good, strong battery. Impurities in the battery material create small internal cells that drain the battery over time. Purer matierials cot more. Follow the money!

Very helpful post and image! I replaced mine today on my C7 fob which is the same as the C6 fob and this method worked perfectly! Not like my last try when I broke my C6 fob while trying to open it and spent over $100.00 Thanks owc6 for posting. Dave

FOBs for my 2002 ZO6 needed batteries changed once during life of the car and they still worked fine when I sold the car last month. Does the C7 FOB draw more current than C5 FOB?

Who would guess that that pic and how to change the fob batteries is actually in the owner's manual?

My first car with RKE and push button start was my 2008 CTS. Six years later I traded it in for my 2014 ATS and one of the two fobs still had the original battery and was working fine, the other fob battery was 1 month younger because I replaced it after I forgot and sent that fob through the washer after I did the first oil change. My 2014 ATS is now three years old and on the original fob batteries with no problems. However a few months ago I installed a new Chamberlain door opener and both the included remote batteries were completely dead so I had to replace those before I could even reprogram the Homelink system.

I think a lot of early battery deaths are from the quality of the battery instead of the current draw of the RKE fob.

You guys are overthinking this. I paid like $5 for a 10 pack or Energizer 2032 batteries (you can find them even cheaper than that, I think a Sony 20 pack is like $8). It takes maybe 2 minutes or so to change the battery, I just replace them in both my cars every 2 years and don't worry... A gallon of gas costs more...

Just replaced both batteries in my 2014. Seems that the batteries last about 3 years max. even if you are not using them....
Also as mentioned, it takes a fresh strong battery. I had a pack of batteries that were new but I bought awhile back, put one in, and the fob still would not work... Bought a fresh pack of batteries, and both fobs now work.

Had to do this procedure when my FOB wouldn't open the door. As soon as I turned the key to open the trunk, the alarm went off. Pulled the tab to open the door and placed the fob in the steering column slot and started the car to get the alarm to shut off. Is this normal?
