AFM has been seamless for me and I like being able to be a good steward of the resources of the planet between wildly stimulating bursts of acceleration.

I like that seemingly inconsistent pair of qualities myself.
If you are a new owner, then go to Spring Mountain. They drive the A8's in the manual mode 100% of the time which eliminates the v4 mode. Since I attended, I drive my A8 in the manual mode all the time. Did not purchase a Vette for its gas mileage.
I agree with your point regarding manual mode. That solves two problems. First, it eliminates AFM. Otherwise it will go into v4 mode often, and it is pretty seamless but an attentive driver can feel the slight shudder. Secondly, it will allow you to shift at a much higher RPM and get more enjoyment out of your car. I have over 8K miles on my 2014 and have been doing this from the beginning.
And if you are on the highway, you have the option of putting it in drive and getting a marginal increase in mileage.
I Have the A8 and when first bought the car I noticed the switching between V4 and V8.
After about 300 miles started using an AFM disabler and used it for another 500 miles and then took it out.
After that I could not tell when it switched between V4 and V8 mode.
Cruising back roads or in the city anywhere between 35 - 55 MPH it pretty much stays in V4 unless accelerating for whatever reason.
Highway speeds at 70-80 or above, it cruises effortlessly and still goes like hell when I need all 8 cylinders.
When I want to play in V8 mode all the time, I use the Paddles
IMO it's the best of both worlds
The REAL irony is that the manual M7 is EPA rated WITHOUT AFM ! I believe in order to qualify, it has to default to ON and not be over-riden, which is essentially the case for the Automatic. ( barring manual mode, a gift from Tadge )
Having used it, it only gets marginally better mileage than my C6 LS3 automatic. The cost in added complexity and penalty in HP makes it useless in a manual trans car. I would only use it on a specific highway cruise where i want to see if i can get high score.. the fuel saving is like $1 on a 100km highway run.
An LT1 without it can probably easily be rated at 485hp, it was like that on the Ls3 comparing the AFM version with the non-AFT ( C6 ) version. having to do with the cam profiles to allow for AFM to work.
Well, I am way past the age of worrying about the 4/8 issue. I enjoy driving my C7 and the miles per gallon that it gets. Best vehicle I have ever owned and extremely enjoyable to drive. At 72 years, I have no desire to accumulate more speeding tickets. Although, I do enjoy spanking a Mustang or two on occasion.
