Default iPod vs SD card

So in the 2015 you can just stick an SD card in the console slot for audio files. I think they removed it for later years, if I'm not mistaken.

Is there any downside to using an SD card rather than a full device like an iPod? Do you lose any functionality like playlists and so on? Anything else I've not thought of?

Now that Apple Music makes iTunes hard to sync an iPod, I'm thinking maybe I should just be doing an "xcopy" of my music to a card rather than disabling Apple Music, syncing iPod, turning Apple Music back on, all of that.

But I'm not sure what the feature differences are between an iPod and an SD card (or USB stick for that matter). Anyone happen to know if there are downsides?

My iPod is only a few years old and works quite well in my '16. Sometime, when I first start the car, it seems to take a few minutes to recognize it, but I haven't had any other difficulties.

Having said that, I use a USB stick. Easier. I just leave it in the car. I use my iPod around the house, so I don't have to go snag it from the garage every time I want it on the patio.

You may receive different pros and cons, but for me, the USB is more convenient than remembering my iPod.

USB Stick here...

It holds thousands of MP3 files and resides in the behind the dash USB port. I only take it out to add new content to it. So far I've had no issues with it in the dash out in the Florida sun. Heat doesn't seem to bother it.

I use an ipod but am curious about the memory sticks. How difficult is it to transfer music from an ipod to a memory stick? Also, can you search by artist, genre, album etc. and also can you transfer created playlists directly from itunes to a memory stick? I am not a tech wizard and do not have any additional programs or experience other than using itunes. Thanks.

I have an extra iPod in the Vette and an SD card in the Porsche. Both work great. I also plug my IPhone into the wife's bimmer and it works just as well. Hopefully someone will reply with the "what happened to the CD player" comment. I love that one.

I have over 11k songs in the cloud, so I do everything through my phone with iTunes Match.

I have an iPod, have tried it in occasion, but the integration with it and the phone plugged in is not good. Haven't tried iPod with phone on Bluetooth. For me the phone is best and I can always add more songs without a problem.

My iPod touch always gave me problems. Sometimes I start the car and it won't play. If the interior gets too hot, it won't play (overheated). So I just switched to a USB stick and it works great.

I have a 500gb SSD drive in the cubby behind the screen.

The issue with keeping an iPod in the car is the battery. Extreme heat can kill the lithium batteries in most devices like this. My old iPod got to where it didn't have enough juice to even boot up using the USB port.

Some people are lucky, and never have issues. So YMMV.

I have went back and forth between iPod and USB drive. Neither has been foolproof. I think my problems stem from Mylink indexing, made more complicated since I have an iPhone too.

iPod: On occasion my iPod will not be recognized. Just unplug and reinsert fixes it everytime. I have tried two iterations of iPod, including the most recent.

USB: I found a very good Apple application to move music and playlists to a USB drive. It even includes album art. The only problem I run into is that playlists and albums end up in the same group. Also, if the same song is in in two folders it might end up playing twice in a row.

This is not a huge deal to me, but it is kind of annoying. My iPod has worked fine in my other cars.

I have experienced these same issues. iPod not recognized, only the first song in an album displayed, playlists not found, etc. I've tried several different iPod models with similar results.

By any chance do you have a Mac computer at home? There is a very easy app I use but I think it's Mac only.

I don't have a Mac. I have a Windows PC with itines, a Chromebook and a Kindle Fire. I guess I'll just continue using an iPod.

The USB 3.0 is a better bet due to not having skipping problems. Really, I started having problems with the 2.0 FD and someone at Best Buy recommend I use the 3.0, since then, not one problem.

I like to listen to a lot of Podcasts so I prefer the iPod but the stick is probably better for general music. I had a 32 gb stick in the center console. Worked great every time.

One mentioned above, but I'm surprised this thread hasn't picked up a comment or two, such as follows...

1. Why isn't there a CD player?
2 The only music I want to hear is my exhausts...

I need to switch over to the MINI forums. I can't get the iPod, SDC card or a USB stick to work in that thing!

Agree and I'm in north Georgia. However I have (and recommended you all) back up the USB somewhere like your laptop.
