Thanks for posting. I updated my 2014 with the v2017 update last year and am happy with it, especially since my new neighborhood is now included! I'll probably skip the 2018 update, but will likely do the 2019 or 2020. If my car has the technology, I might as well keep it as up-to-date as possible (same reason I keep the SiriusXM subscription for the nav traffic/weather even though I don't listen to the radio often).

Exactly!

My work is 30 minutes from home so before I left work one day, I popped in the usb updater and drove home. Once there, leaving it running for an additional 20 minutes in the garage was no big deal.

Is it the *ideal* way to do the update? Nope. But since it’s at *most* a once-a-year thing (for me, probably once every couple years) it’s really NOT a big issue and seems silly to make such a fuss.

Zactly my thinking.... I will leapfrog from 2015 (maybe 2014 since the numbers for map in settings does not correspond to either 2014 or 2015 "official versions").....to 2018 when available then let it be for a few years.

Have the feature, may as well optimize it and for me, I have Garmin etc. for other uses but like the integration, especially into HUD.... but what do I know... smile..LK

Unless you’re buying it from the same company, I’d be very wary buying it off eBay.

*Unlike* the C6 nav disks, C7 Nav updates (they actually are delivered on usb thumb drives now) are encoded with *your* exact VIN, and will NOT WORK on any other C7. Pretty much eliminated the C6 practice of buying this year’s update and selling your previous year disc to recoup some cost, but here we are.

What bugs me is that I buy a 2017 Z06 with Navigation and my home address, I have lived here 5 years is still not available, and even don't know for sure if the next update will include it. I don't need my home address in my GPS, I know how to get home but any other addresses which are within that timeframe are probably not available as well, and they want me to pay for an update that is still probably 5 years out of date!!!

According to the NCM video/PDF these numbers below are the supposed numbers that correspond to the earlier versions (2014-2016) but my '15 has NONE of those numbers when I look in the information display.... go figure..maybe they have "mid year" versions.... nope, doubt it.

BTW, the NCM video is a great tutorial for us "earlier" Nav owners....LK

And I think you'll find that a number of top tier car companies charge for map updates, and at similar rates to GM.

Some quick checking:
>>Lexus wants $169 for an updated SD card.
>>BMW wants between $40 and $199
>>Ford wants $149
>>Even Garmin wants $80 to download the map update on my dashtop GPS. (mine didn't come with 'free' lifetime updates)

Given that, $150 for the GM update doesn't seem terribly out of line, does it?
The problem with the GM update isn't the cost it is the timeliness of the update. They take years longer to include the same data other providers release on a weekly, monthly or biannual basis. It took them 10 years to finally include in their maps a road I used to live on in NC and the road had been in place 11 years. Why wait so long to add a road that everybody else had in their database within 6 months of the road being opened for use? They all get their data from the same source: local governmental data. Why filter out the stuff their Customers need? My Terrain was delivered in March of 2015 and a new section Interstate opened 3 months later. In July of the following year I purchased an update for the Terrain nav system. The new interstate still isn't in it. It has been on my Garmin and every phone nav app I have since a month or so after it opened.

Maybe it’s a regional thing? My experience was markedly different than yours.

My 2017 update had all the new roads in my neighborhood that were finished in 2015/early 2016. (Creation of several brand new main roadways feeding several new neighborhoods in my area — all included in my C7 2017 nav update)

Someone claimed that the data companies charge more for information they update more frequently, and GM cheaps out.

No way for me to know if this is correct, but it certainly sounds plausible.

Much better to just use your I phone connected to the Nav. Much more up to date and a whole lot cheaper, FREE

Lenny, I seem to remember not long ago a forum member put up a thread Warning about buying the GM Nav update......I think his concern was the fact you had to have the car idle the entire time the update was in progress.........that might be a concern? Very long idle time ?

Does anyone knows why GM Nav updates takes 50 mins?
& why does car need to be running, & not just in acc mode?

With all the technologies GM advertises: wifi, OnStar, SiriusXM, etc..., figures it's a quick download & install, instead of mailing us a USB using standard snail mail.

Most of my current hi-tech devices usually takes no more than 5 - 10 minutes to download & install updates, usually by pressing "Yes" or "Go" then walk away & let it update by itself...

Think of installing a new PS4 game...takes a while, especially some of the larger games. Imagine trying to download all of Google Maps for the entirety of North America to your phone... There is a lot of data to process. ACC mode times out and will shut off on its own. You could likely put the car in diagnostics mode and have zero issues installing the nav update without the engine running. Otherwise, just do the install while you're out driving around. Between sitting in the driveway while waiting my for girlfriend to finish getting ready and then driving to lunch, my update was completed.

As and IT guy myself, it seems absurd that it takes that long from a USB drive to update their database....I don't think they are also modding the S/W but not sure.... but that said, that is how long it takes per owner reports.

I echo what others have said that, if you want the latest version, we put on our big boy pants and go have a fun drive while the update takes place vs. wasted idle in the garage.... smile. My F-150 simply replaces the SD card and is "good to go" when you pop it in.... better design for sure but then someone can STEAL your card at dealership etc. since it is not VIN-specific like the GM approach.

I also agree that I would be leery of vendors (amazon, eBay) selling these updates as they ARE VIN-specific.....

I am gonna get the update as soon as it is available to bring my '15 up to date, but that I my perspective.... using other applications or devices (with much faster refresh of road and POI changes) makes total sense, but I do like the integration into the HUD, etc....LK

PS.... someone that has an earlier USB update drive.... can you pop it into your PC and tell me/us what SIZE the DB File(s) happen to be....just very curious....LK

I haven't found where the lady moved my nicely organized folders to for our current cars so I'll try to get those sticks later, but I did find the v2014 update discs for our old 2012 Volt. The updated is contained on 2 DVDs for a total of 11.87 GB. I will say the modern MyLink navigation systems have quite a bit more info/data so I'd expect to find a larger file size on the USB sticks.

Good luck with that. I just looked at the C7 USB and there are so many folders and sub folders and sub sub folders that I gave up trying to estimate a size for the files.

Elmer

Went back and got this: 3.46GB of 14.9GB So 3.46 GB of free space on a 14.9 GB USB, so 11.44 GB of files.
