On our Toyota grocery-getters, about once every three years seems often enough for us.
BTW.... the USB is a USB 2.0 with 16GB.... using 13GB for the map data....LK

The install still takes about 50 minutes, just like last time. Again, started the update before I left work, listened to my radio on the way home, and let the car idle in the garage for 15 minutes when I got home so it could finish. All done. NBD.
All the new roads in my immediate area were covered by the 2017 update, so I haven’t noticed any difference yet.

Will they put the little Speed Limit sign beside your speedometer instead of on the center screen?
We like Waze for speed in areas with enough traffic to give frequent radar reports, but it's worse than worthless out in the boonies where you think there's no radar around but in reality there's just no one to tell you about it.
Google maps has led us astray a few times, just like any other system.
All systems have advantages and disadvantages, all of them will work and none of them are perfect.
The future is with phone-based systems, but it hasn't really arrived yet.
We have the phone navigation and carplay, the factory nav system, and a good set of paper maps. On any long trip we will end up using all three methods.
We just updated our 2017 nav to 2018 data, it took about 30 minutes for the download bar to reach 98%, then another 20 minutes to finish. Kinda like our PC at home. Roads in our area were ok before, so I don't notice any change. Speed limits are much more accurate. For us, worth the money. For others, maybe or maybe not.

Yes, I'm easily entertained

For the c8 GM will FINALLY start doing over the air updates. Its funny that the engineers are excited about it. The problem with "avionics" in automakers cars is that they are all designed by a committee and there are also a bunch of regulations and validation that must be made with the vehicle that slows everything down and lags them behind the rapid pace of phone tech and software. Android auto and iphone carplay are ways to harness that speed and use them in cars.
I'm hoping for the c8 that they will integrate AA and carplay into the hud and systems more tightly; right now I use the onboard nav for speed limits and hud integrated navigation, and waze running for warnings for "roadside hazards" and the like.

Why Should You Update Your Map?
Last year alone, 569,847 miles of road were updated in the U.S.—and that's only the beginning. Here are a few other notable changes to the navigation system map*:
13,195 gas stations added
22,392 restaurants added
10,591 auto service shops added
3,948,564 street names and addresses added
3,503,237 street names and addresses updated
47,973 speed limit indications added
An updated map helps you avoid unnecessary detours that may arise due to road changes, business closings and construction. In addition to the national updates above, you can use the Map Change Dashboard to find out about specific map changes in your area.
* Change statistics represent updates to HERE map data that may not be available for all navigation systems.
One stretch on an interstate near me shows the MPH as being 72 on my '15..... posted as 75.... obviously a typo.... will check to see if it has been corrected..... any bets....LOL....LK

Laughable. We have a construction project here that just finished up this summer on I-75 and Square Lake Roads, the removed the left lane entrance and exit ramps to I-75 and replaced them with right lane ones. The project was announced over a year ago, and finished over a month ago. Google Maps still wrong.
When travelling northbound there is a "construction sign" with information which says:
"GPS WRONG, SQ LAKE EXIT ON RIGHT"
Yep, even the state government knows that people rely on their phones so much (aka they basically are dumb) that they need a sign out there in ADDITION to you know the REGULAR road signs....
