OK... not wanting to tempt fate by trying to use service mode etc. during install and somehow end up like the OP, I popped the usb into the slot and made the trip from Prescott to Phoenix (~100 miles). Still had radio so I was fine.... finally after about 45 mins. I got a message seemingly signaling that the update was done but since I was 80mph plus and not wanting to pull over I just glanced over at the screen.
There was a message giving me one option "dismiss" and so I did and it showed "Loading Maps"... all looked fine.... until the maps actually loaded. The display literally went crazy showing the little white corvette everywhere except for where I actually was..... constantly changing from city to city and finally getting CLOSE to where I was on I17..... but showing me driving on the other side of the divided highway, etc.....
OK... maybe it was taking a while for GPS and Nav to shake hands I thought....but this went on for over 10 minutes !!?? Once in Phoenix I stopped and noticed that the MPH display was not showing for a major highway.... blank number field as if on an unknown road, even though I was on a major hwy. I pulled the USB drive out and reinserted it thinking I would re-install.... that something failed and would try again....noooo... the install files had been erased.
Although it slowly settled in to "normal", I have still had some streets that previously showed MPH not do so. I contacted the GM Nav folks and no help there (the map version shows it is the correct number for 2018 maps). Being a dogged guy, I found the number for the HERE folks that produce/ship the maps, told them my issue and they said there were some similar problems (already) with the 2018 update USB. I got an RMA and shipped the original package/usb back and they will send me a free replacement.... will see what happens.
Other than telling this tale, I wanted to share the HERE support number with any of you that also have issues and ask if you had similar crazy things happen regarding the map location/display/MPH after the update...... did anyone else find the same thing happened after the update!!??
The HERE number is 866-351-7608 and I actually found them to be very helpful. I will post once I get the replacement USB and especially share what happens if you try to update/re-apply what the car thinks is the same version... will it ask to over-write the current info or will it refuse to do so.....maybe requiring a trip to dealer..... will see...LK

That is great while you are under the GM warranty. Gonna cost you more than $900 + a dealer charge to program the HMI module for you next time.
Gotta wonder how badly GM engineers these things that if an update gets interrupted, it breaks the hardware. Image if your PC did that? Would you put up with it? Seems GM is only about 40 years behind the times.
Now all the GM fanboys will flame me...

Stopped by to see what others have done concerning the $140 map update. Since I'm relatively new to in-dash Nav, I wanted to see how others felt about it and the associated expense. Mission accomplished, thank you all.

Your PC can do that - its called a BIOS update going wrong.
