Default Overheating question

Just purchased a 2015 Z51 with 800 miles Certified and took on first road trip. While going through East St Louis the out side temp was 78 the car overheated, killed the A/C, and spewed fluid out the overflow when I got the hood popped. I also noticed no fan running. I let it sit hood open and approx. 20 minutes later the fan kicked in out of the blue and the car started and acted like nothing ever happened. I also had a service the TPMS system come on going back to Texas but went out 70 miles later. I now have 3100 miles on the car after this weekend, and bought to do road trips not sit in the garage like my other ones did but now a little worried as to why these gremlins on my first C7 or did the original owner know something I did not.

Good news bad news. Bad news is it might have an issue if it overheated, but good news is that it's an issue, not normal at all, because these cars never heat up in traffic or public roads.

My 2015 has been rock-solid reliable, so not to worry. There might be a problem that needs to be fixed but there's a solid reliable car hiding under there.

Is it possible you sucked up some garbage? A plastic shopping back or piece of cardboard gets sucked into the air intake, heats up the engine, falls out (or is still there)?

Nothing covering the radiator as this was one of the things I looked at along with checking the fan fuse, I took pics of the dash warnings and of the fluid that drained out to show the dealer as I was not sure if it would show a code thrown or register in the computer that it overheated. I had to use a full bottle of water I had to get the reservoir back up as its all I had, but then drove another 950 miles with my eyes on glued on the Temp gauge.

I have the 2015 Z06, NEVER had a overheat issue-cruisin thru Columbus, OH to Nashville, TN & all points in between. Yours may be one of the cooling fan connector unplugged or corroded contacts..........good luck finding the problem.

There have been some issues with weird over heating occurring on the 2014s. The description is very similar to what happened to you right down to the fan not operating even though the car is evidently over heating. Then after a while everything is fine with the fan running. I doubt the engine is damaged but take the car to the dealer and make sure they understand the occurrence is intermittent. If you take it in soon enough there may be some codes stored in the history files telling them what happened.

My 2014 overheated and spewed coolant. Turned out to be a faulty surge tank cap. Replaced and no problems since.

I put 18,600 miles on my 14 Z51. Never had an issue overheating even on 95 plus days in traffic.

Prior to being at LG I worked at a car dealership, we sold a very low mileage 14 C7 and the same thing happened to him, thought it was just a faulty cap, then it happened again when we road tested it. Can't remember what we did after that but I know it happened again a couple weeks later and we sent it to the chevy dealer and I believe they found a way to resolve. (memory is a little vague on this it happened a year and a half ago.)

My 2015 2LT overheated in crawling traffic in Lousyanna on a 98 degree day, humidity off the charts. It can happen.

ive had my 16 z51 get a bit warm driving kinda hard up and down some mountain roads but never under normal driving conditions.

It goes into the shop on Thursday but a little concerned since my 2012 never went in for anything but service and I upgrade to hit the road and problems start first trip. I can say I have been looking at new ones if they cannot find the problem or problems with it as I am 18 days away from a 30 day PCH trip or supposed to be! Thanks for the replies!

I think that some people have found a defective (intermittant) radiator fan motor as the root cause of occasional overheating in stop-and go traffic.

My 2014 stingray over heated after driving several hours at above freeway speeds and then hitting slow freeway traffic in LA. The dash warning symbol and sounds went off and the temp gauge pegged to the high temp point. Took about 5 minutes to get to an exit as it was unsafe to stop in the narrow emergency lanes. Shut the engine down. Popped hood and no coolant overflow or venting, plenty of coolant in reservoir, no leaks. It appeared the cooling fan was running at a low speed or not at all before shutting down. Hard to see the fan and there was a lot of traffic noise in the area. I'm not sure if this cooling fan is two speed. Let the engine cool for 10 minutes and drove to a nearby dealership. There were no troubleshooting codes noted. They ran it at idle for about 20 minutes and it didn't overheat. I have since drove it, hard at times, for over 2000 miles and the problem has not reoccurred.

I have a 2014 Z51 and just passed 76,000 miles. I live in Florida and drive the car year round. I taken taken numerous trips from Florida up to New Hampshire by way of Bowling green to visit the NCM.

In this time I have had a couple of overheating issues (none in the last 20,000 miles). First time it was the thermostat and second time about 8 months and 10,000 miles it was the water pump.

No issues since then and I still drive it everyday. get it fixed and go back to driving....

I am sure it was no fun breaking down in East St Louis. I worked in East St Louis as a State LEO and I know things can get exciting.

2015 with ..... 800 miles? Might just have had an air pocket that worked itself out when it burped. I wouldn't worry as long as it doesn't happen again.

I had the exact same issue with my 15 z51 this passed weekend. Had been driving on the highway for 4 hours then got off to get gas. While sitting at the light I noticed the temps start to climb and the AC not working. Got the the gas station and the coolant temp was 245 and noticed the fan was not running. Let it cool down some, checked the fan connector, spun the fan...all seemed normal. Fan still did not run so I smacked the center of the fan motor with my hand then got back on the highway. Later that day the fan was back to working as expected and the car was not overheating. I think it is a faulty fan motor.

Can someone post a (CLEAR) picture of where the fan connector is located. My 14 went to close to 250 on the analog needle but not on the digital indicator.

My fan came on after I turned off the car - so Im not sure what to look for.

After a bit of driving I did see it go back down and stay down.

In another post, i was reading that a low battery could cause this as well...as the C7's like a full charge. Maybe toss the battery on a charger overnight to see if that does the trick...funny enough, I put mine on a charger after reading that other post, and sure enough, my battery WAS low...

So little update is I took car into Classic Chevrolet and they advised everything checked out, Pressure check connections checked etc. I just returned from a 3 day 555 mile trip in East Texas and on the return we got into slowed traffic not stopped just 5 MPH, was watching Temp gauge and there it went full peg and had to pull over and shut down. I waited 20 minutes and started and the fan kicked in and we proceeded on. I got to my residence 55 miles later and just as I pulled in the car started to overheat again and was able to get video for the dealer to see. I popped the hood and tapped the fan with a hammer but no luck so killed waited 30 minutes and started and again the fan kicked in. I drove the vehicle back to Dealer and dropped off and given the video to see. Im pretty upset since there's no buyback on a certified pre-owned just repair, which I told the salesman and service advisor that's great but no good when your on the road doing traveling. Sorry to vent just not happy with a car that has now 4000 miles and cant be driven without overheating. Retiring and doing roadtrips are not going so well. LOL Will post the outcome from dealer next week!

So just got a call from service advisor and he is saying the GM Techs think the Mild to Wild switch is causing some kind problem to the computer and causing to overheat. The only mods I have on the car is a Borla X pipe Magna Flow Comp Exhaust, Cold Air kit and Mild to Wild switch. I am getting the vibe that since there are some mods to the car were going to go the route of the car isn't covered under warranty which if they say I will be buying a Shelby 350R and never look back.
