It has a push to open mechanism like all doors like this (and push to close). The lock is a separate mechanism to keep the first one from opening.

Similar to a touch latch on a cabinet. Push in and it holds closed, push again and it pops open. As stated, the lock is a separate mechanism. If your doors are unlocked the gas door is unlocked and opens and closes freely. If you lock the doors the locking mechanism plunger engages in the gas door. The problem is it fails in the locked position and that sucks because there’s no release. The push pin installed in the hole stops the plunger from engaging in it and locking the door. Doesn’t harm anything. There’s other lengthy threads about this somewhere.

Seems like simple enough solutions... for once!

Bingo!

A vandal will add crap/ destroy stuff no matter what. They don't care if they vandalize your car in order to hurt your car.

I've had the scrivet/ plug for over four years.

Here is what a scrivet looks like (hardware store). See Foosh's post number 9. He used a scrivet as opposed to my bolt and nut.

Exactly! I picked up a pack at O'Reilly's about 3/8" wide. Snug, flat, blends in.

For a problem like that, sound like a good solution.

Done, and done Joe. Like you I went through that stuff that I can't throw away, and found a plastic push pin to plug it up for now. It's a bit small, but will hold until I can get one that's big enough.

Just for comparison, mine is making a funky noise, and locking/unlocking seems like 6 to 8 times when I open the drivers door. Another triumph in GM quality.

Mine makes a junky growling noise and I noticed the the pin the goes in and out of the hole only works about half the time. It will either get stuck protruding or retracted. I'll see what it will cost to fix just for fun on my next oil change. Probably $500! I can live with its dying sound.

During my police career, the only cars we had where junk (sand, emery, water, etc) was dumped into a gas tank, were cars with no locking cap or door.
We had no instances of junk in the tank and additional exterior damage, it was one or the other but never both, regardless of lock/no lock.
Go figure...

And in my experience the deed was done mostly by a spouse, or former friend that was pissed off at the owner.

Joe, the answer is simple. You've been looking at new Z06's and your car knows it. You have pissed it off and now you are gonna pay! Lol.

I'll have to take another car when I go Z06 shopping.
I still want to wait until Dec or Jan to see what the new C8 will look like and if it is even a consideration as far as storage. You know how it is to travel with a woman!

You may have to wait longer. A lot of the smart money is on New York in spring for the reveal.

I finally got around to implementing this preventive measure. I bought some fasteners in this diameter but it was not even close fitting. Back to the drawing board.

if any has the correct diamensions please pass them along.

P.S. I do not want to use a metal screw and nut.

I found the same Maxie. I went through all of my crap in the basement, and found at least a dozen of those little things, and every one was to small to stay put. I guess I'm off to to the Autozone.

I have not bought the plastic body fastener yet, but read here on forum that the size needed is 10mm.

Default My 2017 has no lock

Just went out to look at mine. All I do is push in on the door and it pops open, to close push in and shuts. We have a Cadillac XTS same thing.
The funny part in my 2017 has no lock. Cost saving from GM? Or did they leave it off mine?
What years have the lock?

Not sure what to tell you. It's the correct size. Mine pushed in with some resistance as you would want. Perfect fit. I said 3/8" and yours don't look 3/8". 10mm.
